Whats the largest replaement HD I can put in my Presario

It's 60 gb at the moment, do you mean the internal HD or an external, an external should be OK with 1000 gb, to replace HD in notebook is done from the bottom, remove screw F5 under CD-DVD, remove CD-DVD and there is the hard drive, try 320gb replacement.

It should,

check the HD if its properly inserted,if the old one is working before then the new one you bought my be a damage one. try to replace another HD to see if which HD is working or not.

This is an older laptop that uses a PATA (sometime called EIDE or ATA-100) drive.
The largest drives commonly available in PATA type for laptops are 320GB, at 5400 RPM.
There are bigger and faster laptop drives, but they will not work with that laptop since the bigger drives require a SATA interface.
PATA drives are more expensive than their SATA equivalents, it might be better to invest your upgrade dollars into a newer laptop.

Basically you insert a new drive and insert the Windows XP installation CD and follow the screen instructions.

Go to either bestbuy.com or compusa.com and look for the hard drive there. The hard drive will be cheaper going thru either of those places. Also check out pricewatch.com cause you can compare prices there. Also go thru google and check out the shopping results of the hard drive your looking for as well.

Lots of places to check and the hard drive will definitely be cheaper then going thru HP.

go to www.hp.com and look for the support/drivers area.

Choose your laptop from the dropdown list... and so on and so forth... Once you have the driver downloaded... run it and follow the prompts.

They probably never updated the bios, and it's still looking for the old drive, if you get into the bios, you can remove that drive that it's searching for and then make sure that the new drive is being recognised at the 0 position, not 1 but zero, if that doesn't fix it we can go further but that mnmay be the problem, also go into your device manager and make sure you remove the old drive if it's still showing that it is in there. Just uninstall it and restart. the cmos settings should also be cleared by removing the plug and poping out the battery, on the motherboard, it looks like a quarter, it may stll have the old settings stoed in there Good luck, and let us know if it worked
