A brand-new, never-inserted-into-the-printer, ink-cartridge will have a small piece of tape over part of the mechanism, to prevent the ink from drying-out while it sits on the store's shelf. If you inserted a brand-new cartridge, without removing that tape, just remove the cartridge, remove the tape, and re-insert the cartridge.

The error-message did say "this" *OR* "that".

Did you just insert a brand-new cartridge? If so, then the printer-software is requesting that you run through the "alignment" procedure, namely to print a page, and then you qualitatively decide how well the color printout aligns-with/overlaps-with the black printout. With those measurements, the printer will adjust itself, to produce the best-looking (least "fuzzy") colour pictures.

Make sure you are using the correct cartridges for your model. Try to remove both the cartridges. Close the cover. Unplug and replug the printer into the power outlet to reset itself. When the printer turns on, reinsert the cartridges when prompted. Close the cover and check for any error. If none, try to print again.

Try cleaning the Gold section of the cartridges with a wet paper towel.

Unplug the printer and clean the gold contacts on the printer where the cartridge meets up to the printer with a wet paper towel. Do this till the towels come back clean.

Dry both the contacts on printer and cartridges.

Allow at least 30 mins for the printer to dry.

Plug the printer back in and reinstall the cartridges.

Align the cartridges,

Hope this helps.

924 printer is saying to remove tape from cartriage, but tape has already been removed. How to trouble shoot problem and result in alignment?

check that no small particles of adhesive residue still remain on the contacts of the cartridge or receptacle in your printer, these residues are usually quite hard to see. Try cleaning the contacts carfully witht he printer turned off with some Iso Alcohol. If that doe snot rectify your issue try another cartridge.
