I have the same problem. Nikon told me to remove the battery and digital card for 24 hours, then put ONLY the battery back in and try. It didn't work for me, but it is worth a shot.

Even though you have taken good care of your camera it does not mean that parts wear out, switches just go bad after use. Your camera will require repairs at a shop to correct this problem. This is NOT a user fix.
had a similar issue with my Pentax, it would power on and power back off. Tried playing with it for a while and it never recovered. Chances are its time to replace it. These new electronics are jam packed with lots of mini moving parts and are prone to excessive wear over time. they're are no servicable parts inside them unfortunately. I would try ebay for a reasonable replacement camera.
This happened to me too!
Turn the dial to setup, push the menu button & select reset all. This will restore the defaults & let you use the flash again.
