Problems with windows xp fresh install

My hard disk crashed, so i bought new one yesterday at best buy and am attempting to reinstall windows xp. Once I get the system up i want to get the virus protection on and the windows updated before i go any futher. But each time the system reboots it wants to adjust display settings, setup network, ask who the users are, etc. Its like it keeps repeating the last steps of the install over and over again.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Think you may have crashed your display adapter too? That would explain it always asking you to reinstall the drivers. Is this the case?

Was your hard drive damaged by a voltage spike or G force insult? If not it may be able to be recovered by a qualified technician. Its usually worth the money to not have to start over from scratch and also loose all your data.

  • Jason May 11, 2010

Do you actually complete the installation and get the Welcome tutorial?

I'd try doing a clean install one more time.

Let the os install and accept all defaults. U can set the perfers up later. it will install as one user "admin". It will detect any networks U have after the system is all done. U can go online and activate the xp then get off line and install U'r antivirus. Like said above, only boot from the cd once.

I assume that you had Windows XP installed previously prior to the hard drive crash?

You need to complete the installation - have you gotten to the Welcome screen at any point? It sounds like you've not completed the installation and that is why it keeps asking you to set up the network, etc.

You will not be able to install virus protection, Windows Updates or anything else until the installation is completed. Once you have your internet access up and running, you will need to activate the software.

Is the version of Windows that you are re-installing an OEM version (did it come pre-installed on the original hard drive?)

Fresh XP install,, do BIOS Reset (Pull the BIOS battery of from the mainboard and then set it back again).

NEW MacBookPro crashes! I just bought a new macbookPro and it has crashed on three different programs; won't download the manual from online (get the beach ball) and makes a sound when power-ing u

The two "whirring" noises that you hear on power up is normal. The beauty of having a new macbook is you can reinstall the software very easily and a fresh install should fix your problem. Put the disk that came with the machine into the disk drive and turn the computer off. Turn it back on and press and HOLD the "alt" button until you are given the option of booting from your hard drive or your disk. Choose the disk and when it boots up, FIRST go to disk utility and verify the hard drive. If it comes back with no problems, proceed with the fresh install of the system by following the prompts on the disk.

Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

HI my sons acer travel/mate 6292 has crashed and will not boot up, the screen is black but its stating the NTLDR is missing and asking to press ctrl, alt, and delete to restart, yet when I do this it goes...

Hi tracey,

Cause for the NTLDR missing:
  1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
  2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
  3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
  4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
  5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.
  6. New hard disk drive being added.
  7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
  8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
  9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable. are
Solutions:

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Windows XP users
  1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
  2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
  4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
  5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
  6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.

    copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

  7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.
Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file

Edit the boot.ini on the root directory of the hard disk drive and verify that it is pointing to the correct location of your Windows operating system and that the partitions are properly defined. Additional information about the boot.ini can be found on document CH000492.
Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32
If you are getting this error message while you are attempting to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME running FAT32 please try the below recommendations.
  1. Boot the computer with a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME bootable diskette.
  2. At the A:\> prompt type:

    sys c: <press enter>

  3. After pressing enter you should receive the "System Transferred" message. Once this has been completed remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.
New hard disk drive being added

If you are attempting to add a new hard disk drive to the computer make sure that drive is a blank drive. Adding a new hard disk drive to a computer that already has Windows installed on it may cause the NTLDR error to occur.
If you are unsure if the new drive is blank or not try booting from a bootable diskette and format the new hard disk drive.
Corrupt boot sector / master boot record
It's possible your computer's hard disk drive may have a corrupt boot sector and/or master boot record. These can be repaired through the Microsoft Windows Recovery console by running the fixboot and fixmbr commands.
Additional information and help in getting into the Microsoft Windows Recovery console can be found on document CH000627.

Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP

If you have tried each of the above recommendations that apply to your situation and you continue to experience this issue it is possible you may have a seriously corrupted version of Microsoft Windows. Therefore we would recommend you reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
If you are encountering this issue during your setup you may wish to completely erase your computer hard disk drive and all of its existing data and then install Microsoft Windows 2000 / Windows XP. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on document CH000186.

Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable
This issue has been known to be caused by a loose or fault IDE/EIDE cable. If the above recommendation does not resolve your issue and your computer hard disk drive is using an IDE or EIDE interface. Verify the computer hard disk drive cable is firmly connected by disconnected and reconnecting the cable.
If the issue continues it is also a possibility that the computer has a faulty cable, try replacing the hard disk drive cable with another cable and/or a new cable.

Operating system not found

You can't insert a Hard drive from another PC because when it was installed on the old PC it was setup to work with the hardware for that particular computer.

You will need to reinstall a fresh copy of windows on it to make it work with the new PC it's in.Boot from CD run windows setup, format the drive then do a fresh install.

This should fix the problem, if you have any new info or need further help with any of that post back. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

My acer aspire t180 crashed a few months ago and i did not have a windows disk to reinstall it so i used the disk that i got with my dell pc(this seemed to work) but now i have bought a windows xp disk i...

Is the disk you have xp pro? If not, just do the xp home or whatever is on the disk. You may have to format your hard drive to clear it to accept the windows. Get plenty of advise before you do anything permanent like formating your hard drive. Get any factory disks that you can that will have your bios on them.

I formatted my laptop which is using windows vista, how will i bring back the vista again?

once you format your sytems means, you deleted whole OS so you need to reinstall fresh OS on it.
you supposed to have a recovery disk (it comes alongwith laptop while buying it)
but it depends on what basic OS was there when you bought your Laptop if there was XP then you got XP OS recovery disk if there was vista then you have Vista recovery disk.
if you don't have recovery disk then you need to get new Vista disk from market to install back vista in your laptop.

thank you,

When reinstalling XP, install in a directory other than WINDOWS. Your My Documents will be safe, unless you have already overwritten it. Other data should be safe.DO NOT FORMAT THE DISK as the installation suggests.
