My Nikkor 55-200mm (AF-S 4-5.6 G ED VR) lens is not autofocusing most of the time since 3-4 days. In P-mode while pressing the focus bracket is not lit and I can't click. While pressing the button, a slight sound can be heard as if the motor tries to autofocus. only 2-3 times it focussed that too slowly. It works in manual mode. What could be the problem. Is any problem with the motor or anything else. (Camera Nikon D60). Climate is intermittent rainy here now. Keeps in Lowepro camera bag if not in use.)

You might like to check if the A/M slider switch on the lens by the Nikon label is set to A.
It sometimes gets moved accidently.
Set to M the lens will not autofocus.
