My GE refrigerator with a bottom freezer was purchased in 2006. It is extremely noisy. I did not choose the icemaker but it seems to cycle as if it was making ice. The cycle is very noisy.

Ah this is an indication that your condenser has become dirty, or blocked, or the fan motor is not working or the air flow is restricted.
The noise is generated when the compressor cycles off and sudders to a stop
just keep an eye on your fridge temps over the next few weeks if there ok then its just getting noisy with age but if it doesnt hold its temp then the compressor is on its way out but the compressors very rarely fail i would say its just getting older & noisy.
Unit is low on gas. You may be able to have it regassed but it will probably need to be done again at some time in the future as there must be a leak somewhere in the gas circuit.

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.
The motor is an "auto damper" that opens/closes to let cold air from the freezer comp. into the refer comp. depending on the temp. There is nothing you can do for maintenance, the little motor runs the damper when needed automatically. Some motors are quiet, some are noisy (grind grind grind) as the open and close. Sort of the nature of the beast, if you're lucky you get one that stays quiet.
