As a general rule, no. Laying it on it's side can cause the oil in the compressor to flow into other parts of the systems so when you turn it on, it may damage the compressor. The general rule of thumb is, if you should do that, you should not run the unit for at least 24 hours. This should, but not for sure, allow the oil to flow back to the compressor. I've never heard anything good from anyone who's ever done this.
