I have 2006 TTR-250 with nomods and only 200 miles on it. Like another owner, I have problems running except on choke and have seen the pipe glowing red at idle. The bike has always been hard starting. On choke or not, warm or cold, the bike surges and stalls at slow speeds but does not die entirely before coming back to life. When winding out at higher RPM & speed, the engine makes a more of a two-stroke sound and falls off the power curve. I use only premium gas and add stabilizer but no impovements. Its either fuel problem or maybe a spark but spark does not explain the surging, just the die out. Hope someone may have some insights, I'll try the carb cleaner but my gut tells me its more Thanks for your help

Well the glowing red header pipe and the fact that its hard to start is a pretty good sighn that your VALVES need adjusted.on a four stroke bike you have to adjust the valves about every 6 months to a year( and more often if you run it at high RPMs alot) i have both 2-strokes and 4-strokes bikes and have had this same problem with my 4-strokes(honda&yamaha) if you get a manuel and are somewhat mechanicaly inclined you can adjust them your self but if your not, i would take it in and have it done because if not done properly its easy to bend or break a valve( and i think yours has 4 valves.2-intake and 2-exhaust) And head work is not cheep!!!! but a adjustment on the valves is!!!!! good luck....

YAMAHA TTR 250 cherry red exhaust

Because the timing is off. If the timing is too advanced, or too retarded, it will make your exhaust pipe cherry red.
