If convergence is skewed in some area of the screen and will not adjust one of the two STK-392-110 convergence chips the set uses is bad.

See attached photos which show typical convergence problems and what the board in YOUR SET LOOKS LIKE.

This board is fairly easy to get at and the repair easy for a do it yourself person--I can tell you how to get it out and what is involved.

Total parts cost will be under 25 dollars on EBAY.

If the pictures or information told you something you did not know rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

i have this problem, the #2 postions green cross is so far down that I cant adjust the blue or red down to it, it has a dip in it, we would like to know how to fix it please, thank you

  • jburwick Feb 28, 2011

Very helpful. Can you tell me what is involved in removing these pins and replacing them?

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

remove entire front speaker grill (held in with screws on back on either side) convergence board is directly behind plate behind it; the board is right in front----one plug from it goes directly back to another board, you unplug that one at the other board. all others on on this board

  • Anonymous Feb 28, 2011

board is held in at front side with plastic snaps---BE SURE MARK ALL THE PLUGS AS YOU REMOVE THEM! ALL MUST GO BACK EXACTLY WHERE REMOVED FROM.

WITH the board out the two chips are soldered in (18 pins each) and two screws hold each chip in, you with them unsoldered may have to tap them free of the metal.

Look at the resistors in front of both, you are looking for any burnt or discolored.

the chips have to be unsoldered, removed, and replaced (be sure to remove all the old heat grease and put fresh on the two new chips.)

put everything back and turn it on, some adjustment with the remote will be needed.

I have a Sony KDP-57WS550 TV that has a convergence problem. Based on the symptoms, I'm not sure whether to indict the convergence ICs. In the convergence mode, I can move the red (and blue) crosses,...

With your TV in setup Use a small magnet to "move" the non converged Red, Blue, or, Green color lines "crosses" (each CRT will need to be adjusted in turn) by moving the magnet close to the offending Red, Blue or,Green color CRT yoke or, tube while observing the movement of the CRT color line "cross" in a mirror ( try several places near the tube and, several strengths of magnets:) a refrigerator sheet magnet works well (you can cut these with a scissors to make a better fit or, apply less magnetic "pull." by making them smaller (you may need more than one magnet per tube to fix each CRT's convergence) When you have each CRT tube's convergence right, apply some clear silicone adhesive to the magnet and, permanently affix the magnet to the now "fixed" CRT tube exactly where you placed the magnet to obtain the best convergence on the CRT.
(Do not adjust the "Green" CRT unless you must, as it is used as the color line to adjust other lines to)

I have a toshiba tp50h50 rear projection tv and their is a blue shadow behind the words and makes the words a little blurry

Sounds like you need to do a color convergence. If you still have the owner's manual, it will give great detail on how to do this. The convergence menu is accessed from the video menu on the tv.
The tv has three color picture tubes, red, blue and green. The convergence alignment adjust each tube so that color from each tube overlaps each over to create a white image on the screen. Most tv's only allow you to adjust the blue and red colors.
Convergence should be performed each time the tv is moved and at least once annually.

Can not get the focus grid to line up correct green adjusts fine but blue upper left corner will not adjust and the red grid is way off and will not fix

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

50" hitachi 10 years old has blue and green colors

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

My Tv has red light (color) out of focus..I've tried tuning the lance but it's not the problem in the lance..it's something else..don't know what..do you?

Your TV has three picture tubes which are aligned to properly converge the projected light beams on the screen. Each picture tube projects a single color of Blue Green or Red. During production your TV was carefully adjusted to properly align these colors. As a feature you have the ability to adjust these colors.thats called convergence. If you don't have a manual to show you how to adjust you can find one here http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/support.html

I was just given this t.v because friends couldn't figure out what is wrong with itl. The colors don't line up right, looks kinda blurry depending on the lighting of the program being watched. How do i fix...

According to the manual:
1) go to the "TV Main Menu"
2) Select "Screen"
3) Select Adjust Projection TV (obviously only if a projection TV).
This then allows you to adjust the TV's 3-colors. Selecting GREEN CENTERING brings up a control panel that lets you center the green projection tube on the screen. Selecting RED CONVERGENCE or BLUE CONVERGENCE lets you align the Red & Blue projector tubes. Centre the green projector tube 1st. Then adjust the red & blue until the test pattern on the TV screen appers white.
Good Luck!

Philips Blue Shadowing

If you have not already done so go into the picture menu and set the convergence. The convergence is the angle at which the three picture tubes meat at a given distance. The tv will have at least 3 and up to 64 convergence points, and those 64 can be set for all three colors. This can be tiresome but I'll be it will solve your problem. What your trying to do is get the color in the cross-hair so you cannot see the color behind the target. On top of the fine setting for each point and color you will probably have 3 gross adujustments for blue and green and maybe red. These adjustments will affect positioning, like what you are discribing. You should do this at least every month, the thermal cycleing of the lamps is what will cause this to creep out of adjustment.
