Wlile suppling power to my house with my 5000w coleman, through the 240 oulet, with the main house breaker off, the power came back on. i shut down the gen and opened the house breaker but forgot to unplug the gen.then i heard a noise from the gen and puled the plug. now i can't get any power from the gen.any solutions or have i got the gen burned out

Bad capacitor in the alternator field or a short in the rotor / stator

You CANNOT do this, USA 240V is derived from a poly phase scenario, IE 120V line to neautral and 240V line to line, UK 240V is derived from 1 line to neutral it will not work unless you power a transformer

There can be nothing but a bad voltage regulator in the end of the generator. They are getting harder to find. Robert

it will do this if the load that's on it drops off momentarily.

If you are wanting to connect using the 120/240 outlet, I would use a #12 gauge 4 wire cable. If over 25 feet, then I would use a #10 gauge. The wire size will make a difference, so that is why I am offering the two sizes. Please make sure that you have a transfer switch if you are connecting to the panel. This will prevent someone from getting seriously hurt or killed.

Sounds like you have lost one leg of your power

Think of it like this

You an upside down "Y" at the top of your breaker panel
220 - 240 volts come in the Y and break in half 120 volts to each leg of the "Y"
A 220 Volt breaker straddles both legs a 110 volt breaker only contacts one leg
I suspect that you have lost one leg
Possibly at the main breaker ( top most)( main disconnect) in your panel
If you have a tester with the capacity to test 240 you can test the two top lugs where the main wire comes in Test them together That is one probe of your tester on each wire you should show 240+/- volts
Then you can move down through the panel 120 +/- on each leg

At the wire assembly there should be 2 white and 2 black wires, a white and a black are the ends of one 110v winding. With the 2 white wires connected together you should get 240 from the black wires. This sounds like it is a problem with one of the circuit breakers in the 240v outlet in the control box, check them with an ohm meter.

the gensets on coleman generators are definately nothing to brag about but i would start by checking the windings and make sure the brushes have a clean armature to ride on

my voltage meter shows 300volts instead of 230-240 and continues to trip generator breaker. What is my problem?
