We have a Panasonic DMP-BD30 (firmware updated yesterday to v1.8) and get subtitles on other DVDs. The packaging on "Swordfish" shows English subtitles, but there is no menu to set them up; the movie starts immediately. At the end of the movie there is a menu to select other features, but still nothing about subtitles. Any ideas?
Make sure that your video and subtitle have exactly the same name.
For example:
movie.avi (your video file)
movie.srt (your subtitle file)
As you can see the sub name and the video name are totally the same. We just changed the extension, so the player will be able to load the appropriate subtitle for the right movie.
Check the language settings on the DVD player. I'm not familiar with Panasonic machines, but most players have default language options for subtitles, soundtrack & menus.
The firmware update may have reset this option.

Im using a LG DVD player and cannot view the English subtitles on TV despite it displays that the English subtitles are on. When I switched to my SONY DVD player, the subtitles play just fine. It's frustrating to have this and what's the solution????
I'm watching the Polish film "Katyn" on a Panasonic DVD-S35 and, in spite of selecting "English" via the "subtitle" button on the remote (the only other selection is "-------"), they're still in Polish.
I went into the player's setup menu and set "English" for the subtitles, but the same thing is happening. Very frustrating. I just bought a PAL converter in order to watch that movie and it's supposed to have English subtitles...very frustrating!
