This error can be caused by a paper jam, or a little piece of paper in the toner area, Take the cartridge out and use a flashlight to check in the sides looking for paper. Other reason is that sometimes the sensor that detect the toner is out of place and in that case you can try to power cycle with the toner out before you install it again. Good luck
Just solved your exact problem! There is an orange piece of plastic INSIDE the printer where the toner goes...
I have a LaserJet M1522nf and am getting an error message stating "Replace black cartridge", even though I have installed a new cartridge. I have tried 2 different new cartridges and still get the same error.

1. Remove all the cartridges, Turn of the machine, keep it off for few minutes.
2. Turn on the machine while you press the cancel button.
3. Install the cartridges (keep pressing the cancel button everytime you install them)
4. Take a chip from the old cartridge and replace it on the new black cartridge.
This should fix your problem.
