I have a 1998 Maytag Neptune Front Load Washer. It recently makes a very very loud sound in the spin cycle, even louder in the max extract cycle. Everything else is normal besides this loud sound. Should I have it looked at by a service tech.
No, I'll tell you before forking out $ $ for some bad news. The noise is your bearing. You have to replace the outer tub .Its not going to be repaired any other way.The idiots who designed this washer made this a non servicable bearing. The labor is high not to mention the outer tub is also.REPLACE THE OUTER TUB.

I have researched this issue, and it seems that for anyone not mechanically inclined, replacing the bearings involves replacing the entire tub assembly, which is rather costly. I also had to repair my neptune as part of the class action lawsuit, surrounding the bad wax motor/circuit board issue. And of course, there is the mold and mildew issue that is ongoing as well. Although I am somewhat mechanically inclined and could likely replace the bearing for ~$150 and several hours of cursing. I've decided that I've lived with the mold and mildew and have dealt with Maytag's crappy engineering and sub-par service for too long. I'm cutting my losses and buying an LG. NEVER AGAIN MAYTAG!
