Newer Nikon D40 camera with 18-200 VR. Won't autofocus but sounds like it is trying. Manual focus ok.
Which lense are you using?
Non AF-S and non AF-I lenses will not autofocus at all
The old 300 mm f/4 AF has to be put in the M position to focus and it only focuses manually.
let me know
good luck
Here is a link to a user guide written by an actual user.
Very reader friendly and very explanitory.
I think you might find it interesting and helpful.

And what setting do you have the AE-L/AF-L on?
AE / AF lock? AE lock? AF lock?
And do you have it set on AF-A, AF-S, or AF-C?
thank-you
So some info for you, hopefully this helps.
Sorry if you already know all of this.
AF-S stands for AF-Single. The D40 focuses once, then locks the AF for you to recompose the shoot.
AF-A magically selects between AF-S and AF-C.
Try setting the camera to AF-A while leaving all other settings where they already are and see what happens.
I look forward to hearing more.
