No response to the remote, but on board controls work. My remote control tester tells me the remote is working.
If the remote is sending a signal and the unit isn't responding, the remote may need a reboot. If someone accidentally pressed multiple buttons at the same time, that can cause the remote to send multiple signals at the same time and that can cause the unit not to respond because it doesn't recognize the signal being sent.
The reboot is easy. All you do is remove the batteries and then press all of the buttons on the remote one at a time while they are out. After you've done that, you can put the batteries back in and usually that fixes the issue.

If either of those don't work, let me know but include the model of your remote control please.

I have a e60 525i that I just brought and it has the same problem, the owners manual suggests driving with the key in the ignition for a long time as the batteries are rechargable and may have gone flat, i have tried this and it doesnt seem to work
i also read something about getting water in the aerial about the rear window and that wrecks the receiever. My car isn;t under warranty so not looking forwarding to taking it to bmw

You need to resurface the contacts. Here's how you do it:
First, disassemble the remote. Clean the black foil pads on the circuit board with rubbing alcohol. Now take a #2 pencil and a razor and shave the graphite from the "lead" onto a piece of paper (hold the blade perpendicular to the lead, this results in a finer powder). Now that you have a nice pile of powdered graphite, blot a Q-Tip into it to saturate the cotton with graphite. Rub the graphite onto the little black pads on the rubber button membrane, and be sure to apply more graphite to the Q-Tip every 2 to 3 buttons. Blow off any excess graphite. reassemble remote and test.
