You need to completely disassemble the hand held remote unit, remove the rubber push buttons and clean the contacts. Mine do this frequently. The contacts are black and will be slimey. I just use soapy water and a soft cloth to gently clean them. Be sure to dry them completely before reassembling. Also be sure you dont get any of the electronics wet.
Dont be intimidated by the idea of completely disassembling the remote, it only has 3 screws, no springs or small parts to lose, and is an amazingly simple task. You can do it. Now go fix it, you will be glad you did.
Amazingly simple and worked great! It's just like new! Thank you, joepaxton!
Thanks for the suggestion. Worked like a charm
Also have a site that I found with replacement units. I ordered 4 for my house.https://www.hunterceilingfanstore.com Goto the parts tab, then the remotes tab and choose the one that matches your needs. Good luck!

Yeah, you're exactly right, Joe. The rubber inside turned to black goo. I wiped that off and now the remote works again.
