Every EPSON Printer has a preferences or maintenance part to do what you want to solve its ink problems. Check it out and do some maintenance with regards to ink problems. Use your mouse pointing to Printer icon and right click on it and there you will find out the properties/references/maintenance to solve the ink problems. Good luck!

Sounds like you have either a defective cartridge but if both cartridges are not being recognized it's likely a problem with the printer.
Take it back to the store you bought it from for a refund or replacement.

try to see if you install correct the cartridge and clean the contacts on it, if this dont work you have a faulty cartridge, return it.
SOURCE: Epson Stylus SX400 "Ink cartridges cannot be recognized"
Try this: First check which cartridge(s) are not being recognized. In my case where I replaced all three color cartridges, two were recognized right away but one was not. You find out by sending a print request to the printer and looking at the ink cartridge levels diagram in the dialog window. In my case two of three were fine but one had a red X on it. So I removed it and cleaned the contacts with alcohol then rocked it in the slot after pressing it in. It was recognized and the charging process began as normal.

Epson Printers are sensitive in terms of Ink Cartridges.. The latest Epson Printers does not have ink reseter.. Ink reseter are already built-in on the ink cartridges.. The problem on this printer is when you have a cartridge on your printer, let say, 30% of the ink level, even though your ink is new, and you change it without using the right ink replacement method, it will recognize your ink as a 30% ink level. When your ink level drops to 0%, but you have remaining 70% of the ink, it does not recognize it anymore. The chip on the ink cartridge is already registered as an empty cartridge.
