I'm using the autocom device on my bike w/ the kenwood tk3102. it receives great from the second unit as a handheld but won't transmit.
both radios' lights come on as they should, but the receiving radio just has white noise and no voice. both radios work perfect by themselves. i have all the appropriate leads, are the radios compatible?

Based on your post, I would suspect that the transmit audio line from the Autocom to the mic input of the Kenwood TK3102 is faulty/not connecting right. All others (receive audio and PTT) are wired correctly. This is inline with what IrishDruid has initially posted. Additionally, the Autocom is also working since it kicks the PTT through its VOX (voice activated relay) and there is transmit (albeit the TX audio) or manual PTT.
Additionally, there are some 2.5mm connectors that are just a bit short of what Kenwood requires.

Normally, in most systems, the 3.5mm connector is for the speaker. The end terminal is for the speaker + while the body is for the ground, while the 2.5mm connector would be for the mic and PTT. the end terminal is your audio line, the second for the PTT and the body for the ground.
Based on your post "...just white noise and no voice...", I still think that the 2.5mm stereo phone plug is not reaching deep enough to make contact with the Kenwood's mic input. Either that or the mic audio output of the AutoCom has an issue.
Would you consider a DIY or seek the assistance of an electronics tech/enthusiast? If yes, to determine if the Kenwood is able to transmit using external mic, it would require purchase of an appropriate size mini phone plug (2.5mm?) that will fit into the external mic jack of the Kenwood, something similar to the one shown here.

If you would plug this 2.5mm mini phone to the mic of the Kenwood and short the PTT to ground, you are simulating the transmit. If you would touch the audio line, you should hear a humming sound in the other Kenwood acting as receiver aside from the "white noise". The next step would be to use small alligator clips with wire 
to jumper gnd to gnd, PTT to PTT and mic to mic of the AutoCom's mic connector/plug to the rear end of the 2.5mm stereo phone plug that is inserted into the Kenwood. If this works, there is nothing to be concerned with the Kenwood nor with the AutoCom and the fault is with connector/plug.

It looks like either the autocom is defective, or you have incorrectly wired it. Since both radios work perfefctly well standalone, its only the communicator , ie the Autocom device which seems to be the problem.

Also, try exchanging the radios and make the sender the reciever. See if you are still having white noise. If you are, then the problem is with the Autocom device. If not, then the problem is with the original recieving radio,,

i purchased 2 units and they both have the same problem. seems unlikely they're both bed
they are both kenwood tk 3102 A
the units are the active rider plus. the cables are all autocom, kenwood specific.
the problem i'm having with the diagnosis is that both units are doing this. i fell it's unlikely both are at fault
done that. they're baffled also. what about the quite talk feature on the kenwoods? would that cause no voice signal
i guess i should go back to the basic question:
is the kenwood tk 3102 (A) compatable with the
autocom active rider plus? i know the units are
not bad, the cables are not bad, the radios work perfect on their own. i'm using the recommended kenwood cable to interface with the autocom unit. everything works perfect except you can't transmit through the headset. you can receive through the headset when the second radio is used as a handheld. when you transmit back to the handheld through the headset and the autocom it sends the signal through to the handheld but it's just white noise and no voice
ok everyone was right. a defective cable. i just assumed a cable fresh out of the packaging from autocom would be good. thanks for the help
