Your defrost system is at fault.
Most likely the defrost terminator thermostat attached to the freezer coil.
Could possibly be a bad defrost timer.
I would have to have the exact model number to be more specific.

I have a Kenmore top mount freezer model number 74242..its only 4 yrs old...please help cuz its driving me crazy....should the fan in the freezer run all the time to curculate cold air? because mine doesnt'

  • Anonymous Sep 22, 2010

The freezer fan will probably run 80% of the time.
You have a defrost problem and or a door seal problem if you are having a ice buildup in the freezer.

  • b_j_k_brauer Sep 23, 2010

we already changed the door seal..so if its the defroster is that something i can fix myself or should pay the tech to come out and do?

  • Anonymous Sep 23, 2010

    You can do it.
I need a complete model number from the refrigerator spec plate to help you.

The defrost ADC is inside the control cabinet.
The heater and bi-metal are behind the freezer wall panel inside the freezer.
Use the information in the link below to test the ADC.
The bi-metal attached to the freezer coil is most likely bad.
    Copy and paste this link.

Fridge warm, freezer has frost on back panel & is defrosting, fans work, just changed defrost thermostat, no air is moving from freezer side to fridge side, drain pan under fridge is dry

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

We have a Kenmore Elite side by side refrigerator, model no. 53209, purchased in 2003. Recently the drain hole/hose to the drip pan beneath the freezer compartment has been freezing up, apparently during...

Good day,
It's become a common problem on newer machines with less frequent defrost cycles and for a shorter period of time.
The following clip, as you scroll down will see the most exotic procedure. You may not have to go that far.
Using a length of #14 bare copper wire, and wrapping it around the heater and inserting it into the drain hole will usually work. You will need to remove the heater to perform this process properly, and I prefer to wrap the copper close together, each wrap touching the last one. Your call.

Your machine is a product of Whirlpool which makes many brands, all of them with the same basic system.

Top mount freezer drain keeps freezing up causing water to collect in refrigerator compartment. Drain is not clogged until it freezes.

Check the Evaperator Fan in freezer for correct operation low air flow will cause the problem. Check defrost timer, heater and limit thermostat, If it is not defrosting correctly it will cause the problem.

Refrig compartment does not cool on my new Kemore Frig.

Check and make sure the fan in the freezer is running. if not possible bad fan. If fan is running, check to see if you have any ice built up on back freezer wall. Normally frost type ice. If so, you may possibly have a bad defrost bi-metal mounted in the freezer section. Next could be a defrost timer control. Model number usally will help more in getting it right.

Kenmore elite - Water dripping from freezer to refrigerator

Your refrigerator has a defrost drain blockage behind the evaporator in your your freezer compartment. Some models like yours have leak in the turns as the water leaves the freezer. I recommend that you unplug and remove the cover to the evaporator and check the defrost condensate tray below the evaporator. A wet vacuum cleaner and poring a solution with clorox in the drain will help you clean locate the leak and where the blockage may be downline.. I do have the manual on yours and can help you solve this. Some times this is a factory defect and I can help you solve the freezing drain problem. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Food in refrigerator freezing solid toward back of compartment

Been there, done that. You need to have a new computer board installed in the fridge near the top. Ours got hit by static lightning ang blew two of them in two years. When they go out, the defrost cycle fails and Ice builds up in the freezer in the back middle. Take the back vover off in the freezer and you'll see it packed with ice since the defroster is not getting the signal to defrost. order a new computer board, install it in the top of the fridge side, in the back, above all those controls on the back right side in a white case to hold the board. defrost the ice by using a hair dryer and letting all the water drain out and get it dry. Those PC boards do not like static at all
