How to move/copy user files to external hard disc (wall or usb powered) so that productivity applications default-save to the external hard disc (virtual drive) folder via...

quite a bit of "what if's there" lol

First of all, yes you CAN re-direct the 'my documents' folder to another location....be it on an internal or external drive volume. This requires careful adjustments to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folder

when you do this, you can assign any path to the "my documents" folder, (and also the others listed,) this will be a permanent change and will cause that path to be the new destination for files saved to 'my documents' by the OS. the actual path does not HAVE to even have the word 'documents' in it...you could call it E:\bubbles if you want.

You would continue to 'save' your new docs to 'my documents', the OS would just be interpreting a new and different destination for the Save.

Should that resource become unavailable, you would have to perform a 'save-as' and then specify a valid save location.

If you are doing this because of limited space on your C-drive, well and good, but if not, then consider Drive synchronization software instead.
These software programs allow you to specify single, or multiple folders, to copy files. you would set it up to copy from your pc to the same-named folder(s) on the external drive, and to propagate changes....so it will save files that are new or changed and delete files that were deleted, (this can be suppressed.)

One of the pitfalls of using USB devices is that drive letters are typically assigned automatically. If you do not manually assign a drive letter that is not typically accessed by the fist say....4 USB drives, it is possible for the PC to become confused and start putting files to the wrong USB device. So assign your external a high drive letter like P for portable, and don't forget to include that in the new 'path' you put in the registry.

I hope that answered your questions.

Transferred Print Shop to a new computer. Copied the files from My Documents. My wife uses it and she says none of the My Arts & Pictures are there. How can I copy them from my laptop to our new...

Hi jeffhale137
You can copy the files on a cdrom or a flashstick , unless your machines are connected in a network making it easy to transfer documents instantly from one machine to another .
The program itself needs to be previously installed on the new Tower , making first sure it's version is compatible with the existing OS .
Best regards ,

I want to reeboot my windows xp

That is both EASY and FUN!.... if you have all your stuff.

Before you do ANYTHING. Make sure you have all your discs. You need the Operating system disc (usually green or purple, says DELL on it). And you need your DRIVER DISCS. (usually blue or black, and there are usually 2-3 of them).

Now, Assuming you have these discs, here is what you do first. login to your machine and look around for files, pictures, documents, etc, and MOVE them to MY DOCUMENTS. Next, take your flash drive.... (if you dont have one, shame on you! those little buggers are NEAT!) and slip it into a USB port, then OPEN the my documents folder. Once youre in my documents, click EDIT, SELECT ALL, then click COPY. now, minimize that window, and go to MY COMPUTER, and OPEN the flash drive (usually E: or F:), then click EDIT and PASTE. Your flash drive (hopefully it is at least 8 gigs) will store your files, pictures, and documents. This will take awhile so go make a sandwich, watch a movie, go on a date, take a nap ,etc.

Once that is done, shut down the machine and remove your flash drive. Now, LOOK at the computer, for a sticker that has the windows XP KEY on it. you NEEEEED this key!!. Without it, you do not legally own windows. Write those numbers down, you will likely need them later.

Start the computer and insert the DELL WINDOWS XP Operating system disc, and boot from the CD. (you can press F12 at the DELL screen then select CDROM drive to boot from).

Windows will begin loading the windows setup. (its a blue screen). Follow the prompts till you see something that says to delete the partitions on the disc. Delete the C: partition and re-create the C: partition, and install windows on it. You will choose QUICK FORMAT NTFS, and then you are off and running. Windows will load the OS from your disc. Just follow the prompts and answer the questions (such as what time zone, computer name, etc). FYI: Computer name can be anything, HomePC, YolandaF, insp6000, anything. You will likely be prompted to input the key, but, since its a dell disc on a dell machine, you might be able to skip it for now. Follow the prompts and answer the questions, and it will complete in about 2 hours.

Once the windows has been reinstalled, get your dell discs and reinstall the device drivers (sound driver, video accelleration driver, usb 2.0 driver, etc etc etc). That will take another few minutes, but luckily, the Dell discs can detect what hardware you have, and install the drivers you need. (they will have a Check beside them). Just go down that list till all the checked things have been installed, and your pc should be back to factory.

Next, register with microsoft to activate windows. Since that key is valid on that box, you should have no trouble. If you do, just call MS (they will give you the 1800 number) and you can read the key, and they will complete the activation for you.

The end result will be a computer that should run just like the day you got it, if not better.

Good luck!

How do i back up my pc? I went to Start-all programs-accessories-sytem tools...but there is nothing regarding back up. I also went to PC recovery disc creator..it says it cant create disc. I took laptop...

If the label of the cd drive on your computer says DVD+ -R RW, it means you should be able to use any kind of disc to backup your data on.
Get DVDRW or CDRW discs from the store. Insert it in your computer.
Click start. Click My computer. Double click Local disk C. Double click Documents and settings. Double click your name or if you dont see your name, click 'Administrator'. Right-click My documents. then click 'send to'. Click the DVDRW option. Enter a name for the disk. You can name it 'My documents backup'. When it's done copying, it means you've backed up all the files stored in the 'My Documents' folder. If you have files saved somewhere else, you just have to browse to the location of the file and repeat the same procedure.

Transfer music from Mini Disk back to Computer

Unfortunately, there is no way to transfer music from a sony mini-disc player to a computer other than playing it through your sound card and recording it. Sony specifically disabled this ability to dissuade consumers from transferring music from one person to another, and this is one of the reasons that Mini Disc Players did not take off.
