Many webcams have a feature that allows them to track a face. the reason they have this feature is so when a person is on a call and they want to move around some, the don't have to worry about moving the web cam. this feature will follow their face so they stay centered in the picture. I have used it in the past but found that it does not work all that well so I end up turning it off. Its very possible that if you have not moved that much or like you said picked up the laptop, you might not have realized it was even on. My software had it off by default but yours might have turned it on by default.
I think you are not experiencing any abnormal behaviour from you webcam software. if you are concerned about being spied upon then you can simply put a cover over the lens. I do this but I do it so I don't accidentally have my face on a webex without manually opening the cover.
At the end of the day I think its a good feature but it does not always work well depending on the brand of web cam.

I know a lot of people are having problems with the acer cam
if you updated msn try going back to your old version
or if you have'nt updated it you can try that.
The only other thing is to uninstall cam and reinstall
I've had to that so many times on my acer crystal eye cam

as ive told others, make sure u actually turn off the software program that came with the computer before using with msn! u should be able to have it on while using it but for some reason some computers wont allow it! it "tells itself" that there are 2 programs trying to run the web cam when really only one is.
but because the program is on, it sees it as being used in 2 places at 2 different times!
try turning off and exiting the software (dell webcam manager) and then go onto msn and try using ur web cam!! make sure the dell manager is exited, then when u have a msn window open, turn the cam on and see if ur friends can see u then..
good luck..
if this doesnt work ill check back and see what i can do for you!

check DEVICE MANAGER if the wireless card have the right driver installed. if you found that the wireless card have yellow exclamation point on the right it means, you installed a wrong driver.
check also in BIOS if the wireless card is enable and the switch is turn on.
press Fn+F2 to enable wireless radio/anthena (funtion key with wireless icon in blue color)
some dell laptop have hard switch located right side check this and turn the switch on.
if you want to see the icon n task bar, go to control panel....network connection...right click on wireless adapter...select properties...check Show on taskbar

are your friends using the same messenger? there's a lot of messenger you can download (skype, msn messenger, yahoo messenger, etc. etc). If both of you are using different messenger your friend will not be able to see you. But if all your friends were using the same messenger and having the same problem I suspected it's your messenger that is causing the problem
Uninstall the messenger that you are using then reinstall it back again.
If you don't have an installer, try downloading the msn messenger from here:
msn-(http://download.live.com/?sku=messenger)
ym- (http://messenger.yahoo.com/)
skype - www.skype.com

you need to uninstall all the drivers that the built in camera has in your computer... then try re installing the drivers back again... you should have the cd from the time you bought your laptop...
hope it helped you... tnx
