Hi Mike,

The error message "A communication error has occurred during the fax transmission" normally indicates that for some reason the fax call was interrupted or there was some interference on the telephone line during the fax transmission. Some possible interruption/interference on transmission(s) are:
1. the telephone line is not a dedicated fax line - there could be an extension which was inadvertently lifted/used during a fax call;
2. noisy/dirty telephone/fax line - corrosion on the terminal, joints, connectors, pins, plugs, jacks, telephone outlet or even on the provider's system. This could be determined by using the handset of the fax machine, dialing a single digit (to make the dialtone disappear) and listening to the phone's earpiece. There should be no crackling sound or static but a clean/dead air. In some cases where the telephone/fax line is shared with the DSL, then it could be the filter/splitter used;
3. some phone lines can still accept an incoming even though in use (call waiting) - the ringing of the 2nd call is more than enough interruption/interference;
4. RFI (radio frequency interference) - an electronic device that transmits a radio signal such as a two way radio, a WiFi router or mobile phone; and/or
5. noisy/dirty power AC mains -the outlet/AC power line where the fax device is plugged in has some other appliances/devices that draws power from it that can cause static/transients/spikes along the power line. Examples are water dispensers with built-in cooler/heater, dehumidifier, aircons, refrigerators and any other that switches itself on/off. A simple solution would be to use a different outlet and/or use a surge suppressor.

As to the "error code number 321*", pls post back the make and model of your fax device. Alternately, you can reference this site. If your fax machine/device is an HP brand (and/or the receiving end's fax machine is), pls check this link.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

What is the problem and solution to error code 420 or 321

Hi,

Are you able to send fax to another # ?. Error 420 & Error 321 is mainly due to transmission of signals or incompatibility issue.

Try reducing Fax speed and turn off ECM from Fax menu and check.

I have an HP 8500A printer/scanner/fax. Everything works but the fax. I can receive but I can't fax out. I get error 348, 321 & 358.

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!

Sir/Ma'am these error are basically due the Communication error of Receiving/Remote Machines. But each error shows different meaning.If during fax you receive the Error 348 then it may be because of several reasons like:-
  1. The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machine because the connection was interrupted. These errors can occur if the phone lines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise,Other reasons can include power outages and other power-related problems.
  2. When The call-waiting service can cause this error or the remote user pressed the Stop key while the reception was in progress.
You can solve the Error 348 by the following
  • Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.
  • Disable ECM. Errors might still occur, and might result in a degraded image quality on the received page. However, the ability to send the entire document will be improved.
  • Try sending at a lower transmission speed.
If during fax you receive the Error 321 then it is because of:-
  1. There was a communication error with the receiving fax machine due to poor telephone line conditions.

You can solve the Error 321 by the following:-
  • Set the receiving machine to receive at a slower transmission speed
  • If the session fails after sending several pages of a large document, resend the document as several smaller documents.
  • Retry the fax reception at a different time when telephone line conditions have improved. Call the telephone provider if line conditions fail to improve.

If during fax you receive the Error 358 then it is because of:-
  • The remote user pressed the Stop key, causing the session to be terminated.
  • The remote machine encountered a system problem such as no paper or a paper jam. This prevented the fax from receiving any more pages, and caused it to terminate the session prematurely.
  • The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for an incoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
  • The remote machine encountered an incompatible feature causing it to terminate the session.

You can solve the Error 358 by the following:-
  • Configure the remote machine for document reception by clearing any paper jams, loading sufficient paper, and clearing any other error messages.
  • Configure the local fax machine to use a slower reception speed.
  • Enable or disable the ECM setting.

I hope this solution helps you and you have clear picture in your mind.

Let me know if you have any confusion in your mind

Sir/Ma'am, Your Rating as Five Stars for this solution and Words of appreciation as Feedback for me will be really esteemed
Thank You for taking my service

I have a HP j6450 unit and I have no problem faxing to numbers outside my area code, however each time I try to fax to a local number I get a communication error.

If you are doing this an the error is appearing then try removing the area code. Alternatively if you are not dialling the local number with an area code try adding the area code to the number. If that fails then try dialling the number with a telephone plugged into the Telco socket of the machine or directly in to the Telco wall socket to see if it responds to a local only number. If you continue to have problems then contact your local Telco supplier to sort out your problem.

Hello, I just purchased a GE SImon XT system with two motion detectors and a smoke/temperature increase detector. I live in a very small house and don't need more. Everything is hooked up and works...

Clarence,

If the problem is the Communication Failure, try to reprogram the Home Security System. The codes that you need are indicated in the user's manual. If reprogramming the Simon would not resolve the problem, try to get the master code from the manufacturer.

Reprogramming the device should resolves the issue.

Fax machine stoped receiveing fax

First, check your fax's phone line. Put a regular phone on it and check for dial tone and line noise. If the line is dead or noisy, this will cause a problem.
You can also try dialing your fax number from another phone and see if the fax unit picks up the line and starts initiating communication. (sounds like modem noises)
