Ink build up under cartridge

This can happen due the printer automatically running a cleaning cycle when any new cartridge is installed, to ensure the ink is properly run into the printhead down to the nozzles. In the main, what happens is the ink that is used during such cleans goes into the Waste Pad but sits on top if the pad is fairly soaked with ink from past cleans and is thus transferred on to the underside of the printhead - thus to get smudged on to the print paper. Ideally, fit a Waste Ink Bottle (search on youtube.com for your printer model and for the Waste Ink Bottle installation - some dealers of ink cartridges offer packs with full instructions but is generally easy and cheap to DIY). All you need is some tubing to fit on the waste ink drain tubing (normally inside the RH side .- where the printhead parks between uses - the youtube video for your model will show how to easily remove the end panel and fit the tubing) and then to put the end of the replacement tubing into a small glass (not plastic as can be easily tipped over - glass is better as heavier) so any waste ink is drained from the felt waste pads under where the nozzles park. Meantime, put the printhead into the Change Cartridge position, then unplug the power lead - NOT turn printer off as that simply parks the head again. With the head in the CC position and power off, you can freely move the whole printhead with its cartridges to the left - then make a decent pad of kitchen paper and find the felt waste pad down on the RH end and press to soak away the surplus ink. Repeat several times until most ink has gone. There is then none to get back on to the nozzle area again and you should be free of the blotching. A small torch will help to see inside the printer. There is sure to be at least one youtube video for your printer on fitting the drain system but if not - try several print cartridge suppliers (not generally the sell-only eBay ones so search using google for main dealers)

Make sure you are using authentic Canon inks, using anything will produce poor results and will void your warranty. Also make sure you are using photo paper. Using standard printing paper is not designed for printing sharp photographs. In the printer utilities, under maintenance there is an option to clean the print heads. Run this option and follow the on-screen instructions. This should be done each time the ink is replaced. If none of these options work, then contact Canon for warranty repair if it is still under warranty.

CANON MP780 DOES NOT PRINT

This is what works for me. Try at your own risk. You may need to clean both areas.

CLEAN PRINTHEAD:

Perform a nozzle check using the Canon software under "maintenance." If the nozzle check prints successfully, the problem is most likely not with the printhead. Otherwise, 1) Lift up the lever above the ink cartridges. Take the ink cartridges out. Put them in a plastic zip lock bag. 2) The container in which the ink cartridges sit is removable. The container is inside the moving mechanism. The container is the printhead. Tilt it slightly and pull up. This should come out easily. 3) There are round pads under which the ink cartridges sit in the printhead you removed. The large one is black. On the underside of the printhead are small slits. The one separated from the others is black. Fill a syringe with Windex. a. Run warm water over the printhead until no more ink comes out. b. Fill the areas where the round pads are with Windex. c. Set the printhead on some paper towels. The liquid will soak through and come out the underside along with the ink. Repeat steps a-c until no more ink comes out, but at least 10 times. 4) Let the print head sit and dry for two hours. Put everything back in the printer. Unplug the printer. Plug in the printer. Turn the printer off. Turn the printer on. Do a clean cycle.

CLEAN PURGE MECHANISM:

You will need a light. 1) Unplug the printer and move the printhead all the way to the left. On the far right are two rectangular basins. The smaller one is black. Take your fingernail or a tweezers and lift out the sponge pad (do not drop it). Soak the sponge pad in Windex until it turns white. Plug in the printer. 2) Fill a syringe with Windex. a. Fill the basin with liquid. b. Let it soak for 5 minutes. c. Turn the printer off. d. Turn the printer on. Repeat steps a-d until you see a small hole in the basin. e. Put the syringe over the hole and fill the basin, pushing the liquid into the hole. f. Let it soak for 5 minutes. g. Turn the printer off. h. Turn the printer on. Repeat steps e-h 5 to 10 times. 3) Unplug the printer. Put the sponge pad back in using your fingers (do not drop it). Plug in the printer. Turn the printer off. Turn the printer on. Do a clean cycle.

If you replaced the cartridges with genuine Canon cartridges then there's probably a build up of ink under the cartridge carriage. Pull out all the cartridges and lift up the carriage. Clean it using a non alcohol cleaner. While you're at it put some cleaner on a folded up paper towel and wipe the ink reservoir located on the right hand side, where the carriage sits when idle. If you replaced your Canon cartridges with off brand cartridges then you might not have changed the chips over. On the old cartridges there's a tiny chip glued to the plastic in front. This chip must be popped off and snapped onto the new cartridge. Good luck

Over on the right is not waste ink pads, waste ink is under the print engine covering the whole bottom of the printer. On the right is the purge assembly and there is ink on the filters on top and on the squeegee that wipes the printhead. You may need a new purge assembly, or just re attach a hose in the purge unit that may have come off. That printer is well worth the repair...

I suggest that instead of replacing , first try cleaning the ink absorber unless of course they are completely worn out.
Most Canon ip printers have similar construction there :Try as below:

Two absorber pads are located on the right side of the printer, under the ink cartridges. With the printer on, lift the top to expose the cartridges. They will automatically move out of the way. You can move them to the left side by hand if the printer is not on. They each sit in a rubber socket. The pads can be removed and cleaned.
Take the pads out of the socket with tweezers. Clean them with warm water. It is best to use a spray bottle (on stream) and blast it through the pad until it is white. Sometimes just putting it under a running tap will be sufficient. If there is ink in the socket after taking the pad out, it can be cleaned up with a paper towel. Put the pads back into the socket and you have successfully cleaned the ink absorbers.

If the FS-1000 prints too far down the page or leave too much top margin or leaves a gap at the top of the page etc (<- for google searches). This is a problem with the felt pads on the three solenoids/clutch electro magnets that are under the right panel (2 under the engine/button board, 1 under the inner plastic cover, sometimes 4 in total on other kyocera printers). They get compressed over time meaning the metal leavers come into contact with the solenoid meaning they are released too slowly. Simply replace the felt pads with .5mm cardboard or another non-sticky non-metallic material. Too thick and it prints too far up the page.

I have never heard of that happen before. I know if they have been refilled they lose there effectiveness causing leaks to happen.

just solved this on my lemark - open the top so cartridges in middle
put cleaning fluid on the 'pads to the right( i userefill kit cleaning fluid) on the 'far right pad' ( the ones that the cartriges sit on when lid closed - they're about under(ish) the on/off switch - i filled the little pads up until almost overflowed (aout 1ml) shut lid so cartridges go back onto the pads, leave for 10 mins, then print out 10 pages of something then repeat the clean again - mine took 3 times then works perfect - hope this helps
