I have a Meade ETX-70. When turned on, the handset says there is a Motor Unit Fault: Motor failure detected due to moving handset between scopes, low battery level, obstructed or overloaded scope. I've...

This is usually caused by low battery power-- as the hand controller reported. DO NOT USE rechargeable batteries they do not have enough volts. Use alkaline batteries only.

This can also be caused by a broken gear or a failed internal motor. You can return these to Meade for repair.

I really need the the battery pack to make work my Meade DS-114AT telescope? or I just need a transformer of 12V to plug in at the outlet to the wall?

You can use a regular deep cycle 12 volt battery-- or any 12 volt car starter battery. All you need is the correct 12 volt cigarette lighter style cable for your scope.

www.scopestuff.com should have the proper 12 volt plug for your scope.

When I focus a star in the East and then slew the scope to the West it goes out of focus. I have have had it checked but they say there is nothing wrong.

This is called mirror flop. All SCT type telescopes have this.

TRY turning the focuser all the way in and all the way out 3 or 4 times to spread the grease out on the baffle tube. This sometimes helps with mirror flop.

The scope will run just fine on 12 volts. www.scopestuff.com sells the cigarette lighter cord for that telescope.

Level a Meade telescope.

You did not say what model, or if it was on a wedge or not???

Model name and number would also help.

LX200 Classic, LX50, LX10, LX90, ??????? Post more information.

Unit does not slew west to east

You never said which Meade telescope you had???

Usually this is caused by either broken gears, or a clutch with grease on it.

It could also be caused by a broken wire in the hand controller cable. Meade has a customer service line here:

My scope goes to everything from the meridian to the west, but will not center on things to east.

Scope is going to do a meridian FLIP-- during the "flip" the gotos can get off a bit-- just center a star on the other side of the flip and SYNC on it using the handcontroller.

Meade etx-80 sticking

Some (not all) versions have an end stop - it it just reaching that? The scope will rotate only aboit 3 complete turns between the 2 ends.

The 'correct' starting position is as follows: Place scope on tripod or table with control panel at the West. Unlock the declination lock (horizontal slew). Rotate scope anticlockwise until it hits the end stop, Then roate it back clockwise until scope is pointing North (should be about 3/8 of a turn, as the end stop is at South West). Then lock the declination, Set the tube horizontal and continue with the alignment process.

Autostar always thinks you have set the position like that. If you haven't, it will work OK until it tries to rotate past the point it won't go, then chaos results!
