Is this a 2008 Laptop?
if yes the LT has solder ball failure.
1: bad screen or
2: bad GPU solder ball failure (vast 2008 did this)
my Elitebook has GPU card that unplugs and a $20 fix.
yours takes magic (high skills) to replace GPU on MOBO.
the diagnosis is very hard,
new display for $100 then find mobo dead (gpu)
or new (used) mobo only to find screen dead. $50?
hope its just loose screen connectors inside.< hint hint?
ask each seller for , if good, and is it guaranteed to be good.

Easy, plug in any external display (vga first)
work now.?
also my elite book has a removable video card
also run free temp monitor software, as CPU core heat and GPU
if GPU overheats, fix that first.
mine has the 15p vga rear
and a video port left that i connect to my HDMI adaptor to TV
so i can watch screen on huge 60" tv if want.
why not use the external displays?
the hot key on top row turns this on..
the HP.com manual is free to read 24/7
page 16 in your manual shows
"VGA (Dsub 15-pin) supporting 1600 ×
1200 external resolution at 75-GHz (hot
plug/unplug with auto-detect)"
mines set to auto detect. per same book.
my 8540w has "DISPLAY" port left side and works with HDMI
so mines more ELITE, nana nana.....LOL

there is someting loose inside the computer so you may have to open it and check for loose conections or pices that they may be loose or video conectors
SOURCE: Lap top screen goes blank all of a sudden
I assume that when you dont use your computer you put it in a sleep mode by pressing sleep button ..so if this is the problem you are facing than there is nothing wrong with your video card and solution for this problem is that remove both the power cables and also remove the battery for time being, after some time put back your battery in the laptop and plug the power cable and restart your laptop it will work fine...........

Your laptop's monitor went bad and needs to be replaced. I had the same problem on an IBM laptop I had. Replacing the monitor costs between $120-220.

Are you running on battery or AC? Try using the power cord, remove the battery and see if it continues. I have seen a battery that is on its last legs do some weird things to a computer. Also, check your power management setting. Control panel, power, and set the computer to "always on" just to see if it could be a power management setting. If none of this works, i would back up all your files, and try to reload win xp from scratch.
