My GE washer # WJSR2080T2WW (about 10? years old) won't drain but will agitate. I don't know if it will spin. Do I even bother to pay for a repair person to look at it?

This is more than likely a clogged or bad water pump. Most of the time it is just clogged. Check to see if the pump is clogged and if so unglog it and it should go back to work. If it is not clogged you need to see if it have power when the washer is in spin. If it has power but will not pump replace the pump. http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/clothes-washer-repair.html#GE

My hotpoint has quit spinning, how do I evaluate and repair

If it will not agitate or spin, you will need to replace the belt. If it will agitate but not spin, you have a bad transmission. This has been a nightmare to Hot Point (GE). I did warranty repairs for GE for 8 years. During that time, GE had me condemn on average 6 washers a week due to bad transmissions. Reason being, it was cheaper for them to send the customer a new washer than it was for them to ship me a new transmission and pay me to replace it.
Sorry but take my advise when I say, when you replace your washer, don't but a GE or Hot point. They still have not bothered to fix their transmissions.

My Kenmore 70 series is 18 years old. It will not

Hello. Since your machine is 18 years old and the agitation/spin is costly to repair I would definitely recommend a replacement washer.

How old is the washer ?

Here is an interesting report I just read!!!!!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old washer

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your washer,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your washer is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that washers under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your washer is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new washer.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive washer
eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of washers you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.

GE Washer smells like burnt rubber

Hi, timhowarth1
ngafm at your service,

Because it wouldn't agitate or spin at all the belt burned as it tried to spin!
A problem with th coupler or transmission.
You need an experienced and hands on laundry tech or you may make matters worse or spend money replacing parts unnecessarily.

How old is the washer?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you it may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliances are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!
Water,Electric and detergent! And put money back in your pocket!
The new appliance will pay for itself in only a few years!

Ge he fl washer vbvh624of

Peace Friend,
ngafm At your service!

You did nothing to cause this! Things wear out! So is life!
Sounds like the coupling between the transmission and the agitator is broken!

Only a trained laundry tech can make the electronic diagnoses.
