Can I use the receiver to set up the satellite dish to receive a signal at initial set up?

firstly the satellite dish antenna must be correctly aligned to satellite you want to receive.
technosat setup" initial setup" select the correct safelite ,once selected u should see signal strength /quality then tune the channels...auto works best, after this you can create your own favorite channel list

It sounds like the dish may be mis-pointed since it's not recognizing all the satellites. The next step for this would be to send a technician out to get everything fixed.

If you want to receiver a satellite signal, you will need a dish outside and a receiver to decode the signal enabling you to view the programs. I hope this helps.

Sony Satellite Dish Antenna Operating Instructions

Operating a Sony satellite dish is a process that first requires correct dish placement to ensure strong signal reception. Additionally, the satellite receiver must be installed, and only then can you use it to put the dish in operating order via the use of its signal meter screen. Fortunately, you do not need to be a professional to complete these operations properly.

1. Initial Sony Satellite Mounting

   • Look around for a suitable mounting area for your satellite dish. This mounting area should be free of any debris and also allow for a flat mounting area. It's best to utilize a hand-held level to measure and make sure that your Sony satellite dish lies flush with the mounting surface beneath it. Also, look to the skies above before settling on a mounting area, as obstructions such as trees, power lines and tall buildings can block signal reception for your Sony satellite dish. Once a spot is chosen, go ahead and crudely aim your Sony satellite dish to the southern sector of the sky above. This will save you some time later when you return for further adjustments

It looks like you have lost the signal for the 119 satellite from your dish. Are you getting an error message, either 002 or 015, saying the satellite signal has been lost or acquiring satellite signal? First, check the cables on the back of the receiver to make sure they are secure. You can also run a check switch test to see if there is a problem between your dish and receiver.

Press the Menu button on your remote. This will bring up the Main Menu on your TV screen. Input the numbers: 6 (System Setup), 1 (Installation), and 1 (Point Dish). On the right side of the Point Dish screen are 3 buttons. Select the Check Switch button. Within the 2 large boxes are satellite numbers and green or red boxes. Make a note of the satellite numbers (should be 119, 110), the trans, the device, and switch. Super dish and alternate should not be checked. Select the Test button on the bottom of the screen. If a box pops up with a warning about TV 2, select Yes. It will now run the check switch test. Let it complete the test. After completion, the screen will automatically go back to the Installation Summary screen. You may get a message stating that the Check Switch test has found fewer satellites than previously detected. If you get this message cancel out of each screen (do not save the results) till you are back to the TV screen and it is acquiring Satellite signal.

If you don't get that error message, see if the information on the Installation Summary has changed. Then select Done on the next 2 screens and cancel out of the others till you get the message, Acquiring Satellite Signal. After it finishes acquiring satellite signal and downloads the program guide, see if you are getting a picture - try different channels. Yes there is an option for ouptuting 480i signal from most hd receivers. You will need to check the specifics for the satellite dish receiver as to the channel that the TV should be on as well as how to set it to the resolution that you need. (I know some Dish receivers need channel 60 for the SD TV (coax (RF) connection) when it is TV 2 but channel 3 or 4 for TV 1.) Also check your TV so that you can use the best possible input available.

However, you may not be able to read the closed captions unless you enable them on the receiver. (Apparently, the encoding has changed.)

Hi, Mary with Dish Network Customer Service. The 61.5 Satellite carries mostly High Definition programming. If your Satellite Dish is an older model, it is not equipped to bring that Satellite in. It is the part on the Dish called the LNBF (the eyes) that will pick up the satellites. Your receiver is a Standard Definition, you should be reading the 119 & 100 Satellites. You need a receiver for each TV you want to receive the reception on. Your dish receives the broadcast signal from the network and your receiver decodes and recodes the signal to view on your TV. The companies have created their own proprietary equipment to accomplish this to keep anyone and everyone from simply installing their own dish and receiving all of their broadcast channels for FREE. In the olden days when satellite and cable TV was new, that is exactly what people did. Remember those gigantic dishes some people installed in their yards? They would intercept the signals coming from the satellites and hook up directly to their TVs. The companies got smart and started to scramble the signals going up to the satellites to make these home owner dishes obsolete. No, you won't get significant signal in the FM spectrum from your satellite LNB coax. The dish is tuned to pick up signals of a very different frequency, and aimed to reject any signals not coming from a very specific direction -- up where the satellites are.

For FM, you need to receive signals from ground-based transmitters, in a different frequency range.

That said, you can totally use the coax to bring signals from your rooftop down to your stereo. To do this, you'd need to get up on the roof, disconnect the coax from your satellite dish and attach it to an FM antenna.

You should have your system setup in the following manner below:

You also will only be able to receive the HD locals with a HD OTA antenna. It is possible that you will need to turn the satellite off in this room to view the OTA's effectively.

Also you should use a splitter as depicted in the picture by the red boxes to combine signals of this frequency. The blue box is the diplexer on the incoming satellite feed and the black box is the seperator that most dual tuners use. If yours does not utilize this device you will have another cable coming from the outside of the house to the back of the receiver. The location of the ports on the back of the receiver in my diagram may differ in position on your receiver so obviously connect them to the proper port. I hope this ressolves the issue and there is no need to seperaate the signal at the remote tv as it will only be a duplicate of the same signal you have connected already as OTA and the TV2 backfeed are of the same frequency range.
