I had the same problem with a HP C5280.
Solved by temporarily removing power to the memory chip which "remembers" cartridges and their expiration dates. There is an internal battery which needs to be removed or temporarily disconnected.
On the C5280 raise the lid and remove the left hand panel (There are 2 screws which require a "star" screwdriver to remove") This reveals some electrical connections at the bottom rear of the printer. There is a small red and black pair of wires in a nylon connector. Gently pull on the connector to break the connection. Now power the printer up. Remove and replace the cartridges as necessary. The error message should go away. If not, try the procedure again, removing the other connections (one is for the tri colour cartridge, one for the black).
Once you have recovered your printer, you can reconnect all the wires, replace the cover, and you are back in business.
Up yours, HP!

Hi Hp 49 is available in the UK I just looked it up on www.amazon.co.uk from about £10.00 for the small ink one and about 20 for the bigger ink capacity.
I repair printers for a living and I have not heard that the 49 was out (that said I the first person to be told) Hope this helps Ian
