First of all, do you have a BlueRay disc player in the computer, or just a DVD player? Also, from what I can tell, WinDVD 5 only supports DVD playback, not BlueRay. That may be why it's seeing "protected content". It just doesn't recognize the disc. If you do have a BlueRay player, you may need to upgrade to a newer version of WinDVD, or try some other software.

How do I play DVD on the BlueRay player?

According to the Vizio website, your VBR231 CAN play DVDs the same way a lot of Blu-Ray players can. The site blurb suggests the VBR231 is backwards compatible - which means your player should be able to play DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. Generally, most Blu-ray players can play DVDs if they are backwards compatible with them.

I do know Blu-Ray discs will NOT work in most standalone DVD decks.

How to perform system software update to renew encryption key on my playststion 3

You may have to renew the AACS encryption key to play content such as movies on commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM). If a message indicating that the encryption key needs to be renewed is displayed, update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed.
AACS (Advanced Access Control System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray Discs. The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc.
An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed. There may also be other times when the key has to be renewed. in the manual

I get this error when I try to play a DVD on my laptop using WDVD

I assume that you are using a TV with the Computer to watch a Blu-Ray disc using HDMI connection.

In order to play a Blu-ray Disc (BD) movie on a television, the display configuration must be set to display on the television only. Having the image set to display on the computer and the television at the same time will generate the above STOP error message "Your display environment does not support protected content playback message".

Follow this procedure to properly configure the settings
needed to play a Blu-ray Disc (BD) movie on a television.

1. Connect the Computer to the TV using an HDMI cable.

2. On the Computer, click the Start -> Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Adjust screen resolution.

3. In the Display Settings window, click the Advanced Settings button -> Intel Graphics Media Accelerator tab -> Graphics Properties button.

4. In the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator window, under Operating Mode, click the down arrow and then click to select Single Display.

5. Under Primary Device click the down arrow and then click to select Digital Television, and then OK.

6. At the Confirm the Desktop Change prompt, click the OK.

7. In the Advanced Settings window, click the OK button.

8. In the Display Settings window, click the OK button.

9. In the Control Panel window, click Hardware and Sound.

10. In the Hardware and Sound window, under Sound, click Manage audio devices.

11.In the Sound window, click to select HDMI Device, and then click the Set Default button.

12. In the Sound window, click the OK button.

13. Now close the Control Panel window.

NOTE: Also check for any update for the software you are using to play the videos and update for the Video Driver

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!

Sony BluRaywon't play back disk

That is one of the problem with manufacturers that don't clearly explain the consumers that most of the blue ray dvd player is designed to play blue ray dvds &regular dvds, but it wasn't never designed to back any DVD-R or DVD-RW.
Sorry, there is no way around it,because Sony enjoyed being exclusive in many things.
