Toshiba Regza sound but no picture

Just the other night i turned on my 3-month-old Regza 27HL167 and the sound was there but the screen was blank. All menus appear just fine, but no other picture regardless of the input.
Any ideas before I call for repair?

i turned on my tv today and found that I have the same exact problem. I have the 32 inch Toshiba Regza. I turn it on and I get a quick picture and then it goes black. The sounds works fine though. Please help. I bought this set not even a year ago.

When I power on my 32" Toshiba Regza, it works fine for about 30 seconds then the screen goes black, sound works fine, but no picture. Is this a home fix or do I have take it to a repair facility?

    same problem

  • Anonymous Jan 05, 2009

I have the 43 inc, with the same exact problem. The problem started one night, the next morning i had a repair guy come out. All he did was turn it on and wala it worked. He ran a few tests, nothing was found to be wrong. He suggested using the componet cables instead of the HDMI b/c of the cable boxes. He said that the HDMI boxes are "bugged".

    37 inch Toshiba Regza.

    Tried HDMI, DVD, TV.

    Sound, but no picture.

Also, cannot pull up the menus.

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2009

I've just started having the same problem, I bought the TV almost a year ago and didn't start having troubles with it until I bought a Shaw PVR. All of the menus and the sound on the TV continue to work but there is no picture. It sounds like it could be the HDMI cable since I just started using one to connect my PVR. I think I'll try using the component cable instead.

However we did find that if we turn off the TV when this happens and wait for the TV to click before turning it back on it seems to work fine again.

I was also wondering if maybe there is interference from the pvr that is causing it to lose the video inputs. I've been reading that the pvr could cause interference to radios and televisions. But so far the only interference that people are complaining about is loss of sound.

all of a sudden i have sound but a black screen.  i can pull up the menus fine, and it makes no difference if it's set to cable or the dvd player.

  • ifonlyihadth Mar 26, 2009

Well, not long ago, my wife and I were watching House when our screen suddenly went completely black. There was no discernable noise or popping sound or pinprick of still visible light...it simply went completely and utterly black, however we're still able to hear the sound perfectly. The tv is only 14 months old, purchased from Newegg.com, and the manufacturers one year warranty expired only a short time ago so I'm hoping against hope that there's some type of explainable repair though in truth I somehow doubt it. At first I tried cyling through the channels and through the various inputs thinking that perhaps it was a problem with our satellite but I was still unable to see any type of picture..still the pure black. However the sound was still active. Afterwards, I unplugged the set and all the connections to it and let it sit five minutes before plugging the tv (minus all video/audio cable connections) back in and trying to turn it on. The red timer/rec light located on the front right lower portion of the tv blinked red a few times and when I pressed the power button the blue tv light located next to it turned on and again I was met with sound but no picture. I've now unplugged it yet again and am going to wait until tomorrow morning (roughly 8 hours) before plugging it in again in hopes that it will somehow be miraculously fixed. I should mention that there's been a thunder/lightning storm during this entire time however there was no surge in power and the tv and cable connections were plugged into a 21000 jule power surge protector. *shrugs* I have no clue what to do fellas and I'm sure as hell not looking forward to missing the NCAA tourny or dishing out hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a LCD barely over a year old. It's frustrating to say the least. If anyone has any suggestions or even better an outright fix I'll be ten different types of grateful.

Our TV is now 13 months old and just the past few days the screen will just go black but we'll still have audio. Sometimes it makes a loud pop sound and then automatically resets itself. Is this something that is just going to continue? Is there something that needs to be replaced?

I had the same problem last night - sound but no picture form any of the inputs - DVD, VCR, FIOS or antenna. I could still see the TV menu. If you go to the TV menu - you can go to the settings (far right top), from there you can choose to restore factory settings, usually needs a code - 0000 (if you did not choose a different one), select yes when prompted if you want to restore factory defaults. This brought my picture back. I lost all of my picture preferences i had set - but at least I got a picture! I hope this helps!!

This is a simple problem to solve... sounds like there are some TV repairmen that do not want to expose the following procedure...
1) Use the remote that came with the Regza and choose the MENU button.
2) Go to SETUP and choose INSTALL
3) Then choose SYSTEM INFORMATION to get to a screen that has left and right arrows... choose RIGHT ARROW.
4) If you have a PIN number key it in or use the 0000 and hit the center button to accept.
5) The screen will then tell you to unplug and plug the unit back in.
PRESTO!

What do you do if you can't get the menu to come up. The sound is on, but when I push the menu nothing happens.

We were given a Toshiba Regza because of this problem. After having a friend look at it we found that the tv will work as long as there is no stress on the panel. If the tv is mounted on the wall or with a stand that secures to the panel it puts stress on it and shuts it down.

We just had exact problem! After lots of frustration my husband turned it off again and upon turning it on quickly hit the menu button followed by the 'root' button (red button). The picture returned straight away!! I was flabbergasted but it worked. Just when we thought we had a big problem it is playing with a fabulous picture again - hope it lasts and does not explode!!

Just had the same issue. Read your solution. Skeptical. But.....worked beautifully. Thank you for sharing this. I would have been totally lost. Cheers!

No solution, but the same exact problem w/ the same exact TV also purchased from Newegg.com. Also about 14 months ago. Worked fine when we went to bed last night. Woke up this morning, turned it on, we have sound, but no picture. The menus also don't work. Please let me know if you, ifionlyhadth, find out what's wrong. We will do the same. I also am rather peeved at the idea of having to buy a whole new TV when this one is only a year old. We also just had the computer (also purchased from newegg.com less than two years ago) break and had to shell out about $200 to get that one fixed... it's been a lovely spring.

No image but sound indicates that the tuner board is working but nothing can be displayed. Could be a faulty power board to power the image driver circuits has lost reliable power, so as the last message indicates that capacitors blown could be the culprit. Check for expanded or leaking capacitors, and replace them exactly as specified.

I am in the same boat!
Top 3 inches of the screen seems to "work" but that's not enough to see the menu! Can anyone give a "step by step" guide for the "blind" on how to navigate the menu to reset the settings? Such as, "Hit Menu, left over 3 times, ENTER, Down 2, enter,... etc"... Thanks so much!

HI, I have a 42 toshiba regza tv that is 3 years old when watching tv the screen goes blank and the sound is still there i power it off then back on and the picture is fine. Somtimes wont happen for days...

If you are using a hdmi cable take it off and switch to component cables if the problem goes away keep it that way. Sometimes the hdmi hookups have bugs like this.

Was watching tv( Toshiba Regza)and the screen went blank.

I have the same television and ocasionally the sound shuts-off, but I still have a picture.
What type of cable system do you have? What kind of converter box? I am trying to find out if it is the TV or converter box. I change the channel a couple of times and the sound usually comes back.

No picture, just sound

No new video card required. I just reset the television by holding the on/off button for five seconds (yellow light on front panel blinks repeatedly). I then cycled power using the remote control and my picture came back. Worked for me. Hope it works for you.
