Computer doesn't detect

My computer doesn't detect my SimpleTech 250GB external drive. It worked for about 3 months then stopped.

  • Anonymous Oct 06, 2008

My external was working for nearly a year. I used it during the day yesterday and it worked fine. Last night I went to use it again and it doesn't read it any more. When i click the Local F (which used to say simpletech) it freezes the computer. I used it on 2 different computers and the same thing happened.

This is the best solution, unplug the device carefully, pick it up slowly, go to your room and stick it up your ***.....

I took my external to Best Buy and asked them to look at it. They said that either the hard drive itself is going bad or the mechanism inside that runs it is going bad. Solution...they can retrieve your info at a price. If it's the mechanism, they said they can put it an external drive hub and it can still be used.

Check with Best Buy or another electronic store that has computer or tech support on site.

How to use it on my new computer

The whole point of having a "backup" disk-drive is to create one additional copy of all your files. So, if the "internal" disk-drive fails, you still have the files, on the "external" drive, and vice-versa.

Open "My Computer".
Connect the SimpleTech to a USB port.
Watch "My Computer" -- it should update after Windows detects the new hardware.
Open "My Documents".
Click "Edit".
Click "Select All".
Right-mouse click on one of the files.
Point at "Send To".
Point at the "new" drive-letter that Windows assigned to the drive,
and all the selected files will be copied to the SimpleTech.

External HD not recognizing USB ports as being Hi-speed ports

I have the same issue. I have 4 Simpletech Signature 250GB drives. They all worked fine at first. After about six months two of them started connecting at USB 1 speeds. It occurs on 4 different computers!!! The post about it being the computer assumes is wrong. How can it work fine for six months and then suddenly change. Also it occurs on different computers. I have submitted a tech support request with simpletech and will post the results.

My computer wont read my Simpletech 500gb hardrive

SimpleTech has problems with their controller board. The HDD inside probably still works fine. You might want to get an external chassis and take the hard drive from the SimpleTech and put it into the external chassis. You will need a sata one.

SimpleTech not reconize by my computer.

hi there,

i will pass on what was given to me for information. if you are still getting power to the drive you can remove the external casing, remove your pc side panel, where you would insert memory and plug the hard drive into the tape inside your pc to see if the pc will recognize the hard drive. if you are not getting any power or platters spinning then it is more serious. i wish you all the best. cherie

Purchased about two months ago. the external drive turns constatly making a grindin sound.

You need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
