Computer went dead

As PC starts watch screen for message "to enter setup press del" or similar. (press F!, press F2, press F12).Power down the PC and then power it back up. Be ready to press the KEY to enter setup while message is on screen. If you do not see the "enter setup" try holding the delete key as machine powers up.
Then repeat while holding F1 key etc. Once you enter setup (CMOS SETUP) find the boot settings and select CD as first boot drive. Put your full install CD in the CD drive have the license code ready. Example; AB123-1RD5C-XP94D-MN47G-LRIPQ. Your key will be on the CD sleeve or license sticker on PC. With install CD in drive power PC up. The PC should boot from the install CD. Do a full install on C drive. This should format your C drive erasing everything on drive C. Format with NTFS (new technology file system). During install the PC will restart a few times. At one point it will require you to type in license code. About half way thru install you will be instructed to remove all disks from drives, at this point you enter setup (CMOS) again and change from boot from CD as first choice TO boot from HD and second choice boot from CD. If you can not complete install you may have a hardware problem. GIVE plenty of time for each install step. Install may appear to have stopped but it will continue when it has completed that step.

Place the CD-Rom back in the drive and reboot the computer. You can just complete a new reinstall.
If, when starting the computer, it does not load Windows from the CD you will need to go into the BIOS and change the boot settings to make the CD-Rom a higher level than the hard drive.
When the computer reboots, look in the bottom of the screen and you should see Push "DEL" or "F12" to enter setup. Push whichever button and enter the setup. Locate the "Boot Order" option and move the CD-Rom up above the Hard Drive. Restart the computer and go into the installation.

If you bought the netbook brand new then in the box you should have a Windows XP Home install disk.
Now because you have not got an optical drive (CD/DVD) in the computer you will need to get yourself an external CD/DVD drive and connect it up to the computer. Pop the disk in the drive and restart your computer. Hit F12 as the computer starts up and select the external drive as the first boot drive. Then you can proceed to re-format and reinstall the operating system.

If your computer has Linux as the operating system you should have a Ubuntu install disk in the box. If you don't you can download the disk free, you are just going to have to use another computer to download Ubuntu and burn it to a disk. Just follow the instruction to boot from the external CD/DVD drive to install it.

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.

To Fix

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.
   
   copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
   copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
   
   
7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot

copy ntldr file from i386 folder and paste in C:\

steps

1. Use the Windows Setup disks to restart the computer, or use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to restart the computer.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows 2000 installation.
3. Press C to repair the Windows 2000 installation by using the Recovery Console.
4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER. For example, type 1, and then press ENTER. 5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.
6. Type map, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
7. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive letter that you typed in step 4 of "Method 2: Use the Recovery Console," of this article: copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\
   
   copy drive:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.
   
   NOTE: In these commands, there is a space between the ntldr and c:\, and between ntdetect.com and c:\.
8. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: type c:\Boot.ini A list similar to the following list appears:

With the old drive in the computer you should be able to do a recovery with the disks furnished with the computer when you got it.

What you have to do with the new disk installed is go into the BIOS and set the disk to AUTO, then srrow net to Boot and set the boot priority to CD as first boot. Then hit F10 or go toe EXIT and say YES. Then with your Windows disk in the ROM drive start the computer and when the window asks whether to BOOT from disk or CD ROM, hit any key and follow the instructions. Including format the disk when it asks.

You need the windows CD to install windows, insert the cd in drive and press enter when asked to press anykey to start from cd.
if you don't get the start from cd and the windows setup doesn't start then most likely your computer is not set to startup from a cd drive, look in the cornerts of your computer screen look for boot menu or press this to enter setup / bios

you can either use the setup / bios or the boot menu and boot from the cd.

if you use the boot menu, make sure the cd is in the drive and select the drive from the list

if you don't find boot menu or it doens't work go into the bios / setup and you will need to change the boot order to include the CD drive FIRST before hdd or floppy. consult your motherboard manual or ask me if you need help in the bios.

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

Hi.

Insert the xp CD in the drive.
Where it asks you to choose a location to install xp, just delete both the partition. (default button D)
Then make two fresh partition and install xp in the first one (that is C).

This will solve your problem.

your machine is looking for the original HD..boot your pc up with the cd that came with machine(restore) but before it gets to the desktop try getting into setup and change the boot sequence to cd rom as 1st boot then hd and so on/ save and exit when it reboots it will ask you..hit a key to boot from cd rom..then you can do as you please
