I just bought my first digital video camera. A JVC GR-D779U. It uses the small mini tapes. There are no instructions on transferring the data from the camera/tapes to my computer. I assumed it would be simple. I have no clue how to do this. I hook up the video camera with the tape in it to my computer via a USB port, turned the camera to "play" and assumed some software would magical appear on my computer to walk be through this. I am running Windows XP on my computer.
Help!
I have the same JVC cam video to computer problem and I went to the JVC website to download software to find nothing pertaining to my model which is new from Christmas 07. I am frustrated.
All you have to do, is make sure your computer has a FireWire card in it, and get a cable and hook it up it will automaticalty reconize the device and open up windows movie maker.
You will need a firewire port (IEEE 1394) in your PC (if you do not have one a card will need to be purchased and installed) and a firewire cable to plug into the DV plug in on the side of the camera.
I purchased a card at a local store for $34 and picked up the cable at a office store because it was $17 after a 50% off discount.
I have worked all day trying to figure this out and Finally found the correct link.

hope this will help others.
