Note that this type of device is designed to be left on at all times, so should not be switched off each night. I suspect that it has some slight corruption in the user-settings, so a factory reset may be required.
Make sure the TV isn't muted. Some times, the cable/satellite can have a seperated volume control. Check to make sure that isn't muted as well. And last, make sure, if you have a home theatre system, that it isn't muted.
If you have multiple systems and each control volume, chances are, one of them has been muted which affects another.
Change batteries.Reboot everythings.Tv unplug,replug couple mins later.Ur Directv box,push off/on for new update software.After that sould work.Rate me after u done this.

You can always turn your TV off, unplug it from the electrical outlet, wait for 30 seconds or so, plug it back in, then turn it back on. If you have kids check the menu options to see if they may have tampered with it unintentionally. If all else fails, call Vizio and ask for their professional help. If you are not satisfied with their help and assistance, make a complaint by going to BBB.org (Better Business Bureau). Maybe if you tell Vizio that you're going to call the BBB then they might take you a little more seriously.
Sounds like your friend burned out the power amplifier. That would be the only reason none of the channels work. Unless the unit was muted by accident and no one checked the mute function - though I doubt that.
