All plasma and LCD ts have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken.

This type of fault in Plasma TVs are of power supply regulator capacitors. If any one of these DC capacitors, go low in rated value, proper smoothin of DC power does not occur. and black bars across the screen fro top to bottom will be the result. Just check for any capcitors of it power retulator side for bulged out or leaky. You have to open the TV to see whethere there is any of them is damaged. OK.

If the picture os goint to lines right from the midpoint downward then most likely you will have to replace the lower y-buffer board part number BN96-02027A. The board is mounted on the left side of the plasma panel when you take the back off. The upper y-buffer board sounds like it is failing as well and this was a very common issue on the older Samsung plasmas. The part number for it is BN96-02026A. It sounds like an Intergrated Circuit (IC) has fried. Even on a good day, this is not something you can attack at home. As a tech (and as an owner of that model samsung), I'd need a map & tools to know what's going on. Your best bet in this situation is to contact Samsung and let them recommend an authorized service center in your area. Sorry I can't be of more help, but this is a rather serious problem.

Try to replace the YSCAN board. If not fix it, then it's the PDP Panel failure.

The plasma display screen is made of a matrix of elements connected to cables along the side and top. On your unit, some of these many, tiny connections are making contact intermittantly thus losing the elements in that area. These contacts are held in place with just pressure and if that is disturbed, you lose that line of elements. Try squeezing the cabinet of the TV on the outside at the top in the area of the loss and see if that makes a difference. May have to go inside and see if the contact assembly is disturbed or warped or something.
