Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton 6200 Watt Portable Generator Logo

My Briggs 10 HP Generator is outside and covered and wont start. It will run with gas sprayed directly in the carburator throat bit not on its own. I have just installed a carburator kit and a new spark plug, but that did not help. I also drained the gas and put fresh gas in the tank. I usually start it once a month then turn off gas till it starves of gas and leave it like that till next month. What now?

Don't leave gas in the tank, or add additive to gas >>> you know that but the next reader might not know.

If you are able to get washer running by spraying WD-40 or some other accelerant directly into carburetor but engine will not continue running ... there are 3 suspects: 1) dirty air filter 2) the exhaust port is clogged with carbon, dirt, etc 3) the carburetor has given out or no gas is getting to carburetor

2) Check exhaust port >>> we finally broke the screen out with a screwdriver so it wouldn't bother us any more
3) Carburetor ... you have spark but the gas is either not getting to carburetor or carburetor is not letting gas in. Pull off rubber line going to carburetor and see if gas flows out. If gas gets to carburetor and all the conditions above are met, then the carburetor needs gum out or rebuilding or replacement

Turn on fuel cock, motor starts, after a few minutes gas starts flowing out of the carb at the air filter

The needle valve on the carbureator float is stuck open or has a little debris stuck in it. You will have to take the bowl off and clean out the seat for the needel valve. A Qtip or small wooden dowel works best.

My b&s 6.5hp log splitter wont stay running unless i spray gas directly into the carb... this is where it's get funny, i took a carb off my

If your gas is E-10 then there is a strong possibility that the line from the tank is blocked, also could be a filter and even sludge in the gas tank all caused by E-10 seperating and becoming thick.

Cant get a spark from plug turning over ok,tried different plug but still no spark

hate to say this but if you used the generator and put it away with out running the gas out your carburator is messed up and it will never start. It not the plug its the gas which has about 10% suger in it. When you leave it sit for ver like 6 to 10 weeks the suger jams the jets.

I did the same dumb thing I had a knee operation and I forget to run my bike dry before. when I went out to start it. well 500,00 carb job.

Best of luck and sorry I could not give you the button to push and make it better

I tried to start my new coleman powermate 6250/5000,

Do check the oil after it has tried to start. Low oil cutoff would certainly cause the problem. Look for the "lost" fuel shutoff valve... there usually is one.

sounds like the float is stuck, how long has it ben setting around? try some carburetor cleaner. spray the carburetor down. empty the fuel tank put fresh fuel with fuel treatment. you may have to remove the spark plug, pull starter string a couple of times to clear out cylinder make sure spark plug is dry put back in and try to start the generator.

I changed the coil, gas and spark plug it still will only turn over and not start what else could it be?

if it has a solinoid which has two wires going to the bottom of the carburator two things you should try one take yhe aie filter off and spray some starter fluid in the carburator it should start but just long enough to run out the starting fluid or next take off the starter cover and take off the small wire off the coil that is called the kill switch it should fire if the engine is turning over you just wont be able to shut it off but you will find out that it is the kill switch
