I have a Pentax Optio A10. Great little camera for about 3 months. Then one day it turned on and then the screen went white. The camera shut itself down with zoom lens out. I charged the battery and waited a little while. It took a few more pics and then did the same thing again. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I havent tried a new battery yet.

    hi surfon,
I also have the same problem and would like to try your idea.  I tried to take it apart and could not get the front plate off.  could you tell me if there is a 'secret' clasp there or something that you found.
    thanks

I can turn on my A10. The zoom lens extends. It makes 3 light beeping sounds. The zoom lens goes back to the closed position and the A10 shuts off. The camera is 2 years old and has worked fine since I got it. This is it's first problem. Help!

My camera is now functioning correctly, cannot believe Pentax would release a camera with this issue. Will never buy their cameras ever again.

I had almost similar problems with my A10 from day one. The camera shuts down before the battery is depleted, most of the time while I was operating the zoomlens. I bought a new battery, but that didn't solve it. Later I decided to take it apart as a last option. As my suspicion was the zoomlens I took out two crews of the motor that operates it. Now the motor has a bit more space to move. It seemed to be too tight against the gears so it could cause an overload. After that it worked perfectly. I made pictures for hours without having the same fault again. Be carefull too make notes where all the tiny screws belong of the casing. And maybe it will be enough to just loosen the motorscrews, but leaving them out will not make it fall out of it's place. I hope someone can use this information.

Greetings, Ron Timmermans.

My pentax option A10 turned black on the screen and won't open

Since the screen went black BEFORE the lens retracted, it makes me think this is a main board problem. The only other possibility is that it is the lens assembly, but since it went black BEFORE the lens retracted, I don't think that is it. I can replace the main board for $40, or you can send it to pentax in Arizona, and they will do it for about $90.
The main board is NOT something that I would suggest anyone try to replace as a DIY project. There are too many small screws, and delicate connections to deal with.
You can contact me at: mrfixitmark at comast dot net

If you just want to sell the camera as-is, I also buy all pentax a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras, in any condition.

Pentax Optio a10 turns off automatically after I turn it on

It sounds like you may have a bad lens assembly. If it is sticking, it will buzz. If it fails to open all the way, it will turn itself back off. This is what it sounds like you are saying. I can fix this for $40, or you can send it to Pentax in Arizona. I don't know what they charge for a lens assembly, but the minimum charge for this camera seems to be about $90. If you just want to get rid of this camera, I also buy all Pentax Option a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras.

Power keeps shutting down.

It sounds like you may have a bad lens assembly, but you did not mention if it seems to be fully extending or not. If it is sticking, it will usually buzz.
