Many people find it more convenient to just take the memory card out of the camera and put it in a card reader, especially now that these readers are built into computers and printers. That would be a "work around" for your problem.
As to the problem itself, a bad cable might be the cause, with damaged connectors. That is something you can replace cheaply (search Amazon on "Olympus SP-500 USB") so it won't be expensive to check it out.
Slow transfer might be due to using an older standard USB port. The first USBs were much slower than USB2 widely used now. Some older computers only have the earlier standard, and some have a mix of old and new.
I work as a Olympus DTS Agent. It sounds like your cable is bad or your Port on your camera is bad. One tip that I can recommend other then calling us at tech Support 1-888-553-4448 is be sure you are always plugging camera in through a usb port on the back of the computer.
The answer to your problem might lie with the OS you are using. For whatever reason, when Microsoft brought out Vista it broke a lot of old programs and devices that worked perfectly fine. Why backwards compatability is beyond Microsoft, I don't know, but its an unfortunate circumstance.
