I just completed a back up using Windows 7 from my new Dell Studio 7100 desktop and I don't see folder names on the Iomega external hard drive, just Back up Files 1, 2, etc. Is it possible to see the folders names instead of just a number so I can verify all folders are backed up? Thanks!

The backup files are compressed to save space and collect large amounts of data. You must use the method of restoring program/file data to open these files.

SOURCE: hi, i have a mac

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

May I offer a couple of general ideas you may want to explore:

  • are the lights/indicator lit (or even blinking) on the iomega and the LaCie? If yes, the power supply is ruled out; if blinking indicates possible electronics/hardware problem;
  • try a different cable;
  • try a different suitable port;
  • try one at a time;
  • interchange port connection (if possible);
  • were they unmounted before the physical removal;
  • you may want to reference troubleshooting methods here and/or here (if you haven't done yet).
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

SOURCE: I cannot create new folders on my external HD

If the explorer shows you have some space left and can not create any file or folder, it might be because of heavily fragmented drive. try defragmenting thr drive using any application. I usually use O&O defrag .

SOURCE: I have a dell laptop and a HP desktop computer, and a 1TB Iomega external hard drive. THE PROBLEM..the video folders/files can be accessed on the laptop but not on the desktop ? the folders are empty

Hi,
it might be that the files are hidden and the option on the desktop to show hidden files is not enabled.. Try enabling hidden files and folders. Start--Control Panel--- Folder Options---View and then enable hidden files and folders.
Hope it helps,

Regards

Dell studio XPS 7100 tower. the power light is orange and it wont start

The amber light can mean that the power supply isn't providing enough power to the system board or that the system board (or the CPU on the board) isn't working.

Since your fans are working, your power supply hasn't completely failed and the board is providing power to the system fans. Thus, either the power supply is giving limited power, your CPU has failed or the motherboard isn't talking to the CPU anymore. (The BIOS is only accessible when the CPU is operational.) I'd first try a new power supply. Make sure to get one that has at least the same power rating as the original, matches the wiring in your case and will fit in your case. (Note: you need to be careful. 1) Some Dell systems use a proprietary power supply (shape and wiring). 2) Many current power supplies are rated by their peak power output, not their stable power output. You want to match or exceed the stable power output of the current power supply.)

If the power supply doesn't solve the problem, I suggest getting a new computer is better than a new CPU or motherboard. (The Dell Studio XPS 7100 was released in 2010.) Replacing the CPU or the motherboard makes your computer a new machine to Microsoft and you may have trouble getting a working license. (You'd have to call Microsoft for activation and they probably will want to charge you for a new license.) Take your hard drive out of the current machine to get your data from it. You can put the drive inside another desktop with SATA ports, use an external drive enclosure (3.5") or SATA drive dock, or a USB to SATA drive adapter.

I hope this helps.

Make a back up of your music on an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive

Copy iTunes folder to your external hard drive
To copy all the items in your iTunes library (including the iTunes Library file that holds all your playlists, playcounts, ratings, and other data) to your external hard drive, follow these steps:

Quit iTunes.
Locate your external hard drive.
Mac: On the desktop or Finder sidebar.
Windows: In My Computer
Locate your iTunes folder:
By default, the iTunes folder is located in:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Music
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
Windows Vista or Windows 7: \Users\username\My Music\
If the iTunes folder is not in the default location listed above then you can find where the iTunes folder is located by following these instructions:

Open your iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Advanced.
The location of your iTunes folder will be listed in iTunes Media folder location box, as pictured below.

Drag the iTunes folder to your external hard drive. This can take a while if you have a lot of items.

When the transfer is complete, your iTunes Library will have been successfully copied to your external hard drive.

Am I able to password protect the 34974 Iomega external hard drive? I am not interested in encrypting, just having a password so it cannot be seen by others

Plug your Iomega hard drive into the USB port on your computer. Click the "Start" button and choose the "My Computer" icon. Double-click on your Iomega hard drive's icon. Right-click in a blank space on the window and choose the "New Folder" option from the menu that appears. Highlight and drag all of your data into the new folder that you created. Right-click the new folder and select the "Properties" tab. Navigate to the "Sharing" tab and check the small box next to "Make This Folder Private." Click the "Apply" button and then choose "OK." Use your Windows login password to access the folder and the contents. Hope this helps

My Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive ("HMNHD") used to work perfectly, until I reset my Dell Inspiron 1545 and installed Windows 7 to upgrade it from Vista. I backed up all my files, program data,...

First and the foremost thing is that when u backup any info to an external hard drive try only back up the data that u have saved. Coz application cannot be saved if done they cannot be retrived. Now if those files are asking for permissions then right click on the file - properties - then on the securities - click on add - then Under Enter the object names to seclect type in Everyone then click on Check Name now Everyone will come in Underlined - click on OK - U will come back to properties tab then on top click Everyone - And under Permissions for everyone Under Full Control Check ALLOW - Then OK
this should fix the issue.
If this does not helps, since u have transfered all the data back to the PC why not format the External Hard Drive. Connect the Drive right click on it the see it teh format option is there or not if present then foprmat it.

My Iomega external ego hard drive(360GigaBytes)will cause my H.P. Pavilion with windows 7 to randomly restart while transferring data.

I had a similar 'rebooting' issue with my WD external drive caused by a faulty USB interface on my Desktop: if you have an external USB hub, try running your drive via the plug-in USB Hub to shield your external drive from your desktop inbuilt USB electronics..

Iomega 250 GB external stopped working

This is really not a solution, but you should all try to connect your iomega to a imac, and use the Disk Utility (in Utilities folder), if you have any luck the hard drive will be recognized and you will be able to format it
