Our 57H81 is about 10 years old and we can hardly see the picture on tv/movies especially - when a dark scene is shown. Do we need to perform maintenance or change out the projection lights to get the...

You can try cleaning the lens/mirrors of the set with a lint free cloth and a cleaning liquid made for cleaning glass. The dark image can sometimes be caused due to dust on these parts. If that does not work then I am afraid that you need to purchase replacement CRTs(the three tubes at the back of the set). Each of them produce one color - Red, Green and Blue and all 3 have to be replaced to resolve the problem, unless you can visually identify a malfunction with one of the tubes(If one of tubes is a lot dimmer than the other 2).

My rear projection TV works fine except that the color is so SATURATED we can hardly enjoy the show. From what I've read, I think whatever is in the glass containers that is red, blue, and green needs...

The liquid is called Glycol and is like antifreeze and very toxic.

Not a job for a do it yourself person.

You can determine if this is your problem in a simple way: carefully remove back cover and with set turned on (do not touch anything in set) look in each of the 3 black lens. You should see a red picture and a green picture and a blue picture.

If you look in any of them and no picture and looks like a floodlight, the glycol in that tube is contaminated with bacteria.

Blue is the most common (red never since the bacteria does not like that color) and green rarely.

If blue is the problem, the picture will have a yellow cast to it (red and green equals yellow).

What has to be done is the offending picture tube has to be removed, drained of the Glycol, the area holding the Glycol taken apart and washed out----then fresh Glycol goes in and tube gets put back and set will need some real adjustments.

Remember, when I have done this it is rubber gloves and do not get any of this on you as you will absorb it into your body and it is 10 times more toxic than what is used in cars.

If you confirm only one tube has bad Glycol shop around and see what shops want for this repair.

Before you rate this solution let me know if you have any questions, I am here to help.

1. My Sony KP-57WS500 TV is turning blue after abut 3 minutesof operation. It stays that way for about 30 miunes and comes back with pictures again, but with predominatly blue color. 2. Sometimes the TV...

Sounds like the picture tubes are failing, common on sony. do you notice any thin horizontal lines? You mite get lucky and be able to adjust the voltages. Remove back cover and look inside to see which tubes are lighting up.The front panel below the screen will come off and behind it is a small access cover.remove it. there you will find the voltage controls (its a plastic square with 6 knobs). 2 knobs for each tube, 1 is focus the other is the voltage labeled "screen". they are marked so look closely. Green is always in the middle but sometimes they flip the controls for red and blue so pay attention to which you are controlling .slowly adjust screen voltages to see if you can get it to stay on. If you over do it those thin horizontal lines will pop up and the tv will shut off again. If you already have lines back off the voltage by turning knob to the left slowly until they diappear. If that seems to fix it but the problem but it comes back later, then the tubes are shot. good luck!

Tv comes on for 10 seconds then fades to a green tint then turns completely green for a few seconds than turns off

Hi,
Symptom shows tv got problem with green picture tube that need to be replaced.
Rear projection tv has 3 picture tubes, red-green-blue to make color picture.
Since its an old model so spare parts would hardly be available and local tv repair shop will help you to arrange required part, if they can.
Thanks.

Green picture only

The projection TV has 3 guns RED GREEN BLUE. In your case the red and the blue guns are gone. So you are getting the green color screen. You got to replace the picture tube.

Sony, tv comes on color fine, then turns red

I had the same problem with my TV, but the hue was blue. I was told that not only did I have to replace the picture tube that wasn't staying on, but I would have to replace them all because they would not mix properly. After much investigation, I found that there is an adjustment for a variable power supply to each tube that can brighten and lighten each tube. I adjusted the RED pot and my picture color issue was resolved! To access this adjustment you must remove the front panel on the TV. At the bottom corners there are two small screw covers that you must remove. Then un-screw the screws under the covers. Then pull the front panel off of the TV, (it hooks under the top near the screen so it will swing out from the bottom). Now remove the wooden panel in the center, (four screws). The pot adjustments are at the bottom of the TV. They are marked for Red, Blue, and Green. They are extremely sensitive, don't turn them much! If you over adjust you will get red, green, or blue lines on your screen. Adjust back down to remove these, (this is also the remedy for removing these lines that can appear over time). Good Luck and God Bless!

Hitachi 51F59A Color/Dark problem

Could be the blue CRT shorting out. I had the same problem but with red. Eventually it shorted out completely. If it is only 2.5 month old it should still be under warranty and they will fix it.

The picture tubes dim over time. It's possible they need to be replaced and/or cleaned. There are 3 of them (one blue, one red, and one green).
