We got an ERROR 5100 on ours when someone tried to fax us 3 pages in "color" rather than the usual "black and white." Which doesn't make sense, because we have the option to fax and receive faxes in "color." After that happened it's stuck in the ERROR 5100 sense June 5, 2008, and we haven't been able to use our printer sense; it's now Aug 11th, 2008. Which is very frustrating sense we paid so much for this.

    Please help fix this!

i have the same problem a error message comes up saying scanner can not communicate with computer every thing else works fine

  • Anonymous Mar 25, 2009

I had exactly the same problem and solved it by using Winows Photo to import scanned documents from the AIO to my desktop. This solution seems to require a few extra steps: I wud like to simply place a document in the feeder then transmit it to the computer for storing or attaching to an e-mail message. The solution works, however so I fully recommed its implemenetation.

I was having the same problem, and thanks to the person who posted solution number two which simply highlighted the fact that the apparently software that came with the Canon Pixma MX700 unit is not compatible with Window Vista.

The reason I was confused is because the printer was working perfectly fine across the network, but when I went to scan my computer would tell me that it can't communicate with the scanner. I'm thinking ... "well since you can communicate with the printer, you should be able to communicate with the scanner, after all, they're the same device!"

As a workaround, I used a third party program to do the scan (in this case, Photoshop) and everything worked fine. If you have Photoshop, just go to file > import to start the scan. If you don't have Photoshop, I would think whatever program you are using for image editing may have the same functionality.

Hope that helps,
Brian

I had mine hooked to an accessory USB2 Card. I moved the cable to one of the "main" usb ports on the motherboard and all is well again. Good luck!

First, go to the windows directory and look for the Twain32 subdirectory. Delete any competing scanners listed. You may have one from an old installation. Disconnect any other printers from the computer, unplugging the USB cord. Best if you unplug all devices except for the mouse and keyboard. Make sure in the device manager there are no yellow exclamations or red marked items (showing conflicts or unworking devices). If there are, uninstall the devices by right clicking them. Uninstall the canan printer/ scanner via the add programs in the control panel. Then reinstall the canon printer/ scanner. Unplug the canon scanner while installing the software until prompted to connect it. Then go to the canon Navigator, which will be in the utilities directory in the start "all programs." Rt click the Navigator and run it as an adminstrator. By now it should work. If it only works when you rt. click it and run as administrator, rt click and go to properties and check that you always want to run it as an administrator. Sometimes this last step is necessary even though the user is an administrator. Thank Vista for all security hassle. I got this by looking through their knowledge base and talking to technical support. It took a lot of work. Let me know if this works. [email protected]

I looked in the ReadMe file for the mx700. It said that Vista will not allow the canon software to scan, that you have to use Windows instead. I opened my windows photos program, and hit import from scanner off of the file menu. You have to tell it to import in color and from the flatbed (or feeder if you like) and it works fine now. Thanks very much, Windows, for making that executive decision for me!

Running vista and 2 PC's, neither work using network scan utility the scanner doesn't show up on the list.

Can you switch to a network install? My local windows clients worked fine, but now have 1 vista and 3 xp on the LAN - the "network scan utility" works for us - might be worth a shot. good luck to you both.

How to scan a slide on flatbed scanner

This model Canon MX700 cannot scan slides.
A flat bed scanner that can scan slides and negatives has a light scource that shines through the slide and negative fand is detected by the scanner sensor.
I suggest you purchase a slide scanner, it will be cheaper that getting a new flat bed scanner with slide capability.

The scanner uses different drivers, so that could still be an issue.
Please go to the canon support site for your printer here, search "scanning" and choose from the results the "error: cannon communicate with scanner." You'll see a series of links like the following, with detailed instructions to resolve this problem.
Issue: ERROR: Cannot communicate with scanner...

1. Connect the USB cable directly to a USB port on the computer 2. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to ensure a secure connection 3. Disconnect other device and reboot computer 4. Press the ON/OFF button to power on the multifunction device 5. Search for USBSCAN.SYS to install scan driver 6. Start the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) Service or Stimon 7. Uninstalling / reinstalling the MP210 drivers (Windows)

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

You will need to download and install the vista driver for this to work on your vista computer. XP & Vista drivers are not the same and that is the reason it will work on the XP computer but not on the Vista computer. Driver should be available from the hardware manufacturers website. Hope this helps.

Communication problem with a MP210 Canon Pixma

Yes! No WIA, no scanning! It means Windows Image Aquisition is not turned on... Not only will the scanner not work but also other Imaging devices like cameras. The best way to find out will be to try and scan from Microsoft Paint. Go to Start, all programs, accessories then look for paint. When paint opens, click file then from scanners or cameras. Try to scan, if it scans then WIA is ok.
It means is the scanner software that was not installed correctly so uninstall reinstall just the scanner software! If Paint does not scan, then its your computer's Operating system (winxp) at fault. Make sure WIA is started, or better try to restart that service (in control panel, administrative tools, services, look for Windows Image Aquisition, restart the service).
