thanks every one....cud fix the problem with those simple tips...but donno if its just temporary fixation...

  • elsje Jun 25, 2008

my beloved s2IS gives a black screen. out of warranty.

i read on dig. forums of many canon powershot S2 users with the same problem. canon support told me that they recognised the black screen problem with the S1, but that the black screen with the S2 should have another cause.

i read about some lucky people, where canon was willing to repair the S2 camera free of charge, but the repair centre in holland is not willing to discuss this. futhermore they will not give a global indication of the costs of this repair before the camera is in. when you know about the shipping cost to and from the repair centre only, whithout knowing what the actuale repair cost.. can't take the risk helas.

  • Anonymous Jun 30, 2008

Same problem , black screen on both the viewfinder and the LCD screen
when turned on to camera mode. Does take a picture but its black. Have changed batteries and reformatted the memory card. It does show the hand icon on both the screen and viewfinder.
Any fixes other than sending it to the repair center??

Same problem, black screen on both the viewfinder and the LCD screen
when turned on to camera mode. Does take a picture but its black. Have changed batteries and reset the digital settings. When sent to Canon for repairs-they want to charge $139.

  • lodeameije Jul 06, 2008

same problem, everything works, but I see that after the diafragm, the second curtain?! stays always closed...
    No matter what I try.

Perhaps I will open it and remove this element. (yep, the camera is out of warranty)

My Viewfinder and LCD screen are black. This did not happen until I had to change hte batteries for the first time. I have since bought 2 other brands to make sure it was not the batteries but that is not the problem. Can you help me fix this?

  • Anonymous Dec 09, 2008

Same problem contacted Canon and they say this problem is not covered under this:

    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro...

thats BS when its the same problem as the S1 IS. fu canon

  • carascamera Dec 11, 2008

Hoping Canon will fix this but losing hope, as it looks like they are telling everyone there was no recall, even though it's the SAME problem as the S1 IS. Bad Sony chip. I love this camera but am so sad about all that I missed (birth of my baby boy, etc.) because of this glitch and being unable to afford a repair.

  • Anonymous Dec 15, 2008

I just contacted Canon about the exact same problem - my screen is black when I go to take a photo, but I can get the menu screen. They said it is NOT a recognized problem, that the S1 has completely different parts in it, etc.,etc... I want to know how many people out there have this problem with the S2 so that we can get this malfunction (yes, I believe it IS a malfunction) fixed by Canon through a re-call. It seems incredible to me that I have seen so many people have the same problem and Canon won't do a re-call. Please post!

  • Anonymous Dec 18, 2008

I recharged the batteries and tried it again this week - black screen!!!!!

I am quite depressed - I love this camera!

  • vanburen87 Dec 20, 2008

My Canon powershot S2 IS will not display image through the lens or on the CRT. It powers on just fine. It will even take pictures but they are all blacked out. No image is passing through the lens.

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

I am experiencing the same problem all of you are. The screen is black, but the camera powers up fine and I can view the menu. I've tried replacing batteries, new memory cards etc. No luck. My wife took the camera over to the Canon repair center and they wanted $139 just to look at it. This has been a great camera till now, and I am really upset and angry that Canon chooses to not help it's consumers with this product defect!

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2008

I have the exact same problem. On Christmas Eve Day, I wanted to take a nice family picture, but the viewer and LCD both just display black screens. I tried new batteries but it still didnt' work. I've had the camera for nearly 3 years and I've never had any other problem. I baby it too, so I've never dropped it or had it in extreme temperatures

  • Anonymous Dec 26, 2008

There are too many other brands out there to throw away $$ on canon if they don't make this right.

I have a black LCD screen, but the various functional/system icons are all showing. I also cannot view through the direct view aperture. Oh, and it will not record images either!

Has anyone had a positive response or result from Canon?

  • elismum Jan 10, 2009

I have the same problem as well. Have had my camera for about 2 years and after reading that heaps of people are having problems it looks like I will be buying another camera. I will give canon a call first though to lodge my complaint.

  • georgesCA Jan 11, 2009

    Same problem here.

  • knsoney Jan 19, 2009

Same problem! The "open & shut" battery door works some of the time, but that's not acceptable. Looking for a new, non Canon, camera.

  • LMRegion Jan 21, 2009

I have the same problem with my S2 1S. At first it could be rectified by switching the camera on and off a few times but now it doesn't respond at all. I wrote to Canon UK customer support and explained the problem, pointed out that I've used Canon cameras since 1983 with no problems at all until now, that many other users are complaining of the same problem and would they kindly like to fix it for me (free of charge). Their response was that they didn't accept there was an issue but that they would do a chargeable repair on it and back it with a 6 month warranty.

  • cool4u Jan 21, 2009

same problem (blank screen) in S2 IS, purchased just a year back

  • selfnonself Jan 21, 2009

everything works, menu and all, but nothing from the lens but blackness. i too loved this camera, it took great pictures and i was hoping it would last me until i could afford a more professional model but now i am questioning if i will ever purchase a canon camera again if this is how they deal with their customers. --it quit on me just as i was going to take pics of the new baby in our family and i was the only one who made it to the hospital with a camera. that was really frustrating, to say the least. i was reduced to using the camera in my phone :|

  • ssingh2k2 Jan 23, 2009

I would say lets get together and send email to Canon company. If they still don't address this issue..I would say lets seek help from Better Business Bureau and ABC news or some big news channel. May be then can help us.

  • yardarm9 Feb 11, 2009

Well, I sent my cameras to Canon (Sydney, Aust) and after paying $200.20 they returned it to me. The good news was that the problem had NOT been fixed!!! You can imagine the words I was using then.

I have returned the camera to Canon, at their cost, to have another go.

As soon as I get the camera back and it's working I will be getting rid of it for a new, NON-CANON camera.

  • dbsya Feb 15, 2009

    Hello,

Exactly the same problem for me !

After 2 years of fun using, both screen display are black and taken pictures are fully black.
I've made a reclamation by Canon, until now, no reaction !!!

  • lazyworm Feb 19, 2009

I have the same problem. Seems like a lot of people are getting this issue on nearly the same time. Is it a build in timer in the camera that trigger this problem. Why don't they just display a message "Buy another camera (not CANON)". What kind of camera and services is that.

  • lazyworm Feb 19, 2009

We should submit a complaint to Better Business Bureau from each one of us to acknowledge Canon that they should address this issue.

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2009

I have exact the same problem. I got this camera today and was absolutely thrilled to have a new camera... and all I get is a black screen.

  • Anonymous May 07, 2009

Change batteries notice came on screen and so I changed them and now I have the infamous black screen. Camera has had very little use.

  • Anonymous May 19, 2009

yeah someone just gave me this camera and the peice of junk doesn't work WTF

  • syrena50 May 19, 2009

I have the same problem with the screen going blank. I've tried the "tv - 1/15- click, wait - remove & replace battery" method but it only works for a bit then back to blank screen. I've also contacted Canon and was told to do a complete reset to original default settings (didn't work) and as the camera is out of warrantee, could send it in but would have to pay for the repairs. That just seems wrong, it's their glitch, not user error. Any other options?

  • lazyworm May 11, 2010

I think we should submit a case to Better Business Bureau www.bbb.com from each one of us to acknowledge Canon that it is a big problem to us.

I have the same problem with my Canon S21S, and I was blown-off by Canon "Support" a long time ago. They won't fix them even though it is the same problem as with the S11S because they're too cheap to spend the money.
So my solution is simple: DON'T BUY ANYTHING MADE BY CANON! EVER!

This is common on all S2, S3, and S5is cameras. Oil contamination wicks into the sutter blades causing them to stick. There is a great video on how to permanently repair this issue at www.youtube.com/alsautoandappliance that details every step precisely. Good luck!

When I argued that this was a common issue they verbally shrugged and said it will still cost £150. Given the cost of the camera this is shocking!

I have been using a fix which sees you going to Tv mode and extending the shutter time to 15 secs, snapping a pic and waiting 7 secs before opening the battery case. You then wait a couple of secs and shut the battery compartment and voila (sometimes). This is fine but it is not 100% and lets face it, it is not what you / we should expect from Canon.

I have noted that in the states they seem to be OK to repair this camera for free but then I suppose that they are more likely to sue Canon than us Brits!

If anyone wants to get together to write / hassle Canon on this then count me in!

I too have the same problem. It appears to be due to stuck shutter and/or iris. The IS does not seems to work either. I cycled the power and tried the manual aperture a few times and it is working a bit better now. It could be dust/moisture/etc so it probably needs a clean. With the canon repair costs, it is not really worth it.

I would like to thank whoever figured out how to fix this black screen.. I guess I am fortunate that it just went bad last week and I bought it new when the camera just was released I think several years ago... anyway it took several tries but all I care is that I got my camera working again... I was dreading calling Canon having seen most were getting no where

Canon power shot S2 IS 5 mega pix camera it just shows a black sc

Your camera has the know issue of Stuck shutter, whichhappens after some time (weeks or months) thata camera is notused.

Unfortunately the repair of it requires a complete disassembly of the camera, including the lens, fix it, and then put back together everything.

Definitely requires th skills, tools and experience to do it, so it's recommended that a professional camera repair center is performing this type of repair.

If you look for a reliable and low cost repair service for it, you can look in ebay for such repair services.

Example, look for seller ID Great_items_2004 or with the keywords "Shutter black S2".

I own a canon Power Shot SD110, and no longer have the manual. I want know how to set the mega pix to have highest resolution possible. Can you tell me how to do this?

To get the best resolution, you need to set it to Large, Superfine. When you look at the LCD, in the lower left corner you should see an "L", and right above it a quarter circle with an "S" in it. If it shows anything else, press the Func button, use the down arrow until you reach the compression or resolution, then use the left/right arrow to select what you want. Press the Function button again to save the setting.

You can view/download a manual for your camera here.
