There are 4 reasons for Error 344 to occur when sending or receiving afax.
1. The remote machine failed to respond to a fax command from the local machinebecause the connection was interrupted. These errors can occur if the phonelines in the area to be faxed are old or there is noise (static on the phoneline). Other reasons can include power outages and other power-relatedproblems.
2. The call-waiting service can cause this error. The click, heard for anincoming call, is actually a momentary disconnect of the line.
3. The remote user pressed the Stop key while the reception was in progress.
4. Under rare conditions, incompatibility between the two machines might causethe remote machine to abandon the call.
Solution 1 Try to send a fax at a different time when telephone line conditions haveimproved.
Souliton 2 Try sending at a lower transmission speed.

I have a HP Officejet J6480 All-In-One and needed the answering machine and fax to be on at the same time. I called the help line at HP and they said I needed another phone line into the home but I tried this and it worked.
First I got a different phone number for the fax machine - they do this for no charge at my phone company. This is not another physical line into the home - it is just another phone number with a different ring - it rings 2 fast rings for the fax machine instead of the phones regular one ring. I set the answering machine built into the phone to pick up after 4 rings and I set the fax machine to pick up on 2 rings. Be sure to set it so the fax pick up number of rings are less than the answering machine pick up number of rings.
It worked for me. Hope this works for you too.
Make sure the fax machine is correctly set up for the ring pattern of its number. I suspect it's either not set or set for the wrong ring pattern, and is answering the phone before you do when people call. Once the fax machine is set for the proper ring pattern the problem should clear up.
You can download a copy of the manual here if you've misplaced yours. Just pick your product (fax machine) and model from the drop-down menus.
On your fax control panel, press the MENU button. Choose either INITIAL SET-UP or FAX SET-UP, from the display. You should be able to scroll through the settings until you come to either HEADER, TITLE, NAME, STATION ID., or PHONE NUMBER. You can then use the number and letter keys to change the title and phone number.
you are correct just use a splitter and if you hear a fax . beep beep then hit answer or just set your fax to answer on the 6th ring. or purchase a dedicated phone line for faxes. who uses faxes any more.
