> can I connect an external hard-drive to it?

Probably.

However, an external hard-drive should _ONLY_ be used to make an _ADDITIONAL_ copy of your important files. It should _NOT_ be used to store the _ONLY_ copy of some files -- if/when the drive fails, the _ONLY_ copy of those files will be _GONE_. Not good!

Instead, it's time to purchase an additional "internal" disk-drive, which will be _NEWER_ and _LARGER_ and _WARRANTIED_ and to use software to "clone" your old hard-drive onto your new hard-drive.

Then, disconnect the old, out-of-warranty, disk-drive, and boot Windows from the new disk-drive.

Then, purchase an EMPTY disk-drive enclosure, for about $30,
install your old disk-drive into the enclosure, to build your own external storage device. Once you're satisfied that your new "clone" disk-drive is working 100% correctly, delete all the files from the OLD disk-drive, and then make a backup of your files onto the now-empty disk-drive.

Use Norton Ghost or some similar Hard Drive cloning utility to "clone" your existing Hard Drive to the external drive. Try Hiren's Ultimate Boot Disk (available for download for free on the 'net). It should have several utilities that can help you out.

How do I back up my computer with an iomega portable hard drive?

  • 1 ***** the size of files you need for taking the backup. Files having graphics, sound and videos occupy more space than a simple text file.

2 Plan the future requirements and consider the space needed accordingly.

3 Choose an external drive of 20 GB or above to store huge data backups.

4 Get an external hard drive and connecting cables to attach the drive to your computer.

5 Select the data you want for backup. Organize the data into folders and sub-folders for easy find. Financial data, digital photos and music can form priority data for backup.

6 Connect the drive to your computer. Use the drag and drop options for taking the backup.

7 Remove the drive after properly ejecting by right clicking on the task bar on the desktop.

8 Keep the external drive away from the place where you have your computer when done. If your computer gets damaged due to any unforeseen reason, you will have your entire data safe in the external hard drive. It minimizes the risk of data loss.

I want to back up my hard drive onto my Elements external drive. The computer says that the Elements 3607 does not have enough space. What do I do?

Well first of all check how many free space you have on your ext. drive. If you DO have enough to back-up your files, then i would suggest you right clicking on your ext. drive, choose properties and format it,but beware, formating will delete ALL your data on external drive.
If you think i was usefull, click on Thumbs up button, cheers!

How to copy photos from PC to external hard drive?

How to Copy Files to an ExternalHard Drive

External hard drives provide great storage space for movies, music, picturesand other documents you want to keep safe over time. The drives generally comewith either USB 2.0 or Firewire connectors, so they also offer reliable datatransfers at high rates of speed. Setting the drives up is usually astraightforward process, and copying files to them from your computer is a snap.

    1. Set up your external hard drive according to its instructions. The two majorsteps in setting one up are connecting it to your computer and plugging it intoan external power source. 2. Install any drivers that camewith your drive so your operating system will recognize it. If the drivers areoutdated, download and install new ones from the manufacturer's website. 3. Open the "MyComputer" panel. You'll see both your regular hard drive (the C: drive)and the external hard drive listed. 4. Double-click the externalhard drive's icon to open its window. 5. Drag and drop any files youwish to copy to the external drive into this window. 6. Right-click the "SafelyRemove Hardware" icon in the System Tray and eject the drive once you'vefinished copying your files. Read more: How to CopyFiles to an External Hard Drive ' eHow.com

External Hard Drive not Accessible after Windows Vista Update

Assuming that the external hdd is physically working fine, everything is pointing to a damaged boot sector.

You can get back most (if not all) your data stored in your external drive with the help of an application called: Pc Inspector File recovery.
    Its a freeware.
    Here is the link: http://pcinspector.de/Sites/file_recovery/download.htm?language=1#

Simply install it on your C:\ drive, and follow the prompts.
Please let us know the outcome.

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

    1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
    2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
    3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
    4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
    5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
    6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.
