We have a Gateway 610 multimedia center (all-in-one). It is about 4 yrs old and the warranty expired inFeb 2008. About 2 weeks ago we had thunderstorms blow through our area unexpectedly and we did not unplug the surgeprotector. The next day, our wireless keyboard and mouse were not working. They were working the previous day. The computer boots up fine but we are unable to move the cursor and no keyboard activity; almost as if they are not being recognized. A new wireless (micro innovations) k/b and mouse are not recognized. All batteries are good. We have tried syncronizing them but nothing. A known working corded mouse and keyboard do not work either. Being a wireless k/b and mouse, there was nothing plugged into any of the ports at the time of the tstorm. A new wireless keyboard and mouse does not work either. Any suggestions? is the motherboard and/or USB ports fried?? Could the CMOS battery be bad (which in my humble opinion is the most likely)? Thank you to all who have attempted to resolve this issue but none of the suggestions work. Very odd problem...
When
your Gateway computer is
switched off, it still keeps track of various system information such
as the date and time, thanks to a small battery that never powers
off. The size and thickness of a dime, the CMOS battery can run out
and need to be replaced. You can swap out a dead CMOS battery with a
new one by removing the Gateway computer's side access panel.

CMOS
battery replacement
Shut
down the computer. Remove the power cable from the back of the
computer case. Disconnect the cables for the monitor, mouse,
keyboard, and printer.
Set the
computer case over on its side. Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to
remove the two case screws at the far left end of the case.
Slide
the side access panel to the left and remove it from the computer
case. Find the CMOS battery port, which will be located to the lower
left of the processor in most Gateway computer models.
Lift up
the plastic clip holding the CMOS battery in place. Slide a
fingernail under one side of the battery and lift it off the
motherboard port.
Check
the orientation of the new battery and compare it to the CMOS
motherboard port. Push the new battery into place in the same
direction that the old battery was facing. Push down the plastic
clip.
Set the
side access panel back onto the Gateway computer case and reattach
the case screws. Plug in the Gateway computer and power it on.
