Set both controls to middle setting, pegging the stat is ok , pegging the colder/warmer to colder ,akes the freezer colder, not the reefer box. colder means colder freezer, it does this by starving reefer box of airflow.

Whirlpool S20b American style f/f. The fridge is very cold and some foods are freezing.

Suggest lowering the refrigerator set point to a lower number such as 3. There is usually an indication of normal setting on the adjustments. Wait 24 hours and check the refrigerator compartment again. Use a thermometer to record the temperatures. The meat compartment will be normal just below freezing. If no success then read the following.

One reason that this occurs is that the unit is working near continuously to reach the freezer temperature. Another words the unit is not capable or cooling the freezer to the prescribed temperature. The result is the excess cooling eventually reaches the refrigerator section causing the refrigerator to freeze. The unit will if this is the case run nearly continuously. This situation is counter intuitive. Freezer not reaching set point, excessive cooling over cools refrigerator therefore refrigerator freezes.

The cause is either the freezer door/seal is not closing or sealing the freezer compartment or the compressor or defrost cycle is not functioning properly.

Check the freezer door seal using a strip of paper. Check to see if air is flowing from the vents in the freezer. Using a thermometer check the temperature of the freezer. Listen for and record if the compressor is running or not.

The normal freezer temperature is around '0' Fahrenheit. If no or little air is flowing from freezer air vents look for ice on the back wall. If ice is present it is likely the auto defrost cycle is not working. Attempt to defrost by hand which requires several hours with everything removed.

Check that lint and dust has not blocked the coils under the unit and that the lower fan is running. Usually warm air exits from the machine grill in the front. Remove the grill and check for air flow and debris buildup. Vacuum if necessary.

And unfortunately if the compressor runs continuously and no air blockage underneath would indicate that the cooling capacity is reduced requiring a major service or replacement.

Hope this helps?

My Whrilpool 3 Door Protton refrigerator was found cooling only freezer compartment, not refrigerated compartment. Local mechanic told that it is a defrost problem and replaced two bi-metal thermostat

this seems to be a major issue with whirlpool and kitchenaid multiple door refrigerators. The defrost timer device on the compressor does not function properly or fails and the cooling coils freeze up. Check the little fan that pulls air through the freezer coils to make sure it is running (that cools the refridg) if not running then it is bad and causing problem. Otherwise you have another bad defrost relay on the compressor. It's easy to change and cost about $25 at the parts store. I just defrost mine every six months or so since none of the ones I tried work very well. Its just a bad design that is still propagating in whirlpool devices.

Whirlpool ffw400wh cools nicely for 3 days then form ice on the freezer & does not cool at the fridge compartment

Sounds like your defrost timer is not functioning , it will need to be replaced. Some times the frost free fan can also cause this but I think it will be the defrost timer.
Located under the fridge usually on one of the rear corners.
Pit has like I white round dial on it .

Hello, We have a Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer

I don't know about Whirlpool refrigerator freezers, but my Amana has a temperature control in the freezer that regulates the overall cooling, and then the control in the refrigerator compartment controls how much of the total cooling is sent to the refrigerator section. My advice would be to lower the temperature setting of the freezer, and see if the temperature lowers in the refrigerator as well. Also, you can go to the Whirlpool website and they can help you further.

Whirlpool refrigerator model # GS5SHAXSLOO: Freezer works fine. Cool air not getting to the refrigerator area. Evaporator fan is working properly.

Hello there,

When your refrigerator tends to be running perfectly fine, but your fridge or freezer compartments are not cooling, then it means there is a problem somewhere inside the unit.

The problem could be caused by either a blocked condenser coil, or no more freon gas in the refrigerator. You need to clean out the condenser coils then refill the freon gas and your refrigerator will be in good condition once again.

Ensure your thermostat is functioning properly also.

Hope this helped you solved the problem.

The top compartment in the refrigerator is cooling effectively. But the lower compartment in the same refrigerator is not at all getting cool. Why is this so?

your damper vent door from the freezer to the refrigerator compartments is either stuck or frozen shut from moisture, sometimes they break and jam too,if this door doesnt open and close your food will get too warm or cold the door needs to move to keep the temperature correct

Upper portion (frig not cooling properly) Lower portion (freezer) forming ice on #3 setting.

Is it forming ice or frost? It sounds like an automatic defrost problem. If the freezer frosts up it won't circulate enough air up to the fresh food compartment. Try defrosting it manually for 24 hours by shutting it down and leaving the freezer door open. Afterwards, if it resumes normal operation I would bet that there is something faulty in the defrost circuit, i.e., defrost heater not working or defrost control.

Fridge not working properly on kenmore bottom freezer model 596.7

I have a similar problem, although I have no cooling in the fridge section. Had a repair man indicate that the electrical panal(pcb board) needs to be replaced. It is on order ($200). Sure hope that is the issue. To me, it appeared that the freezer fan(which cools the fridge) was not working. Whether that is the result of a faulty electrical panal is yet to be determined. Good luck!
