I have done the recording halfway suddenly I get the message 'cannot record
check disc' and I can't finalise the recording that I have done even using the Ac adapter, I can only watch the playback on the camcorder itself and not on my Pc or other device. Please help I do not want to lose the recording that I have done so far.

You have to plug in the AC adapter to finalize a disc. It won't "finalize" on the battery alone.

I bought a new DC310 and faced same problem but later i realize the solution and here it is, your camcorder needs to be in 'Play' Mode only then you can finalize the disc.

Do you have to initialize your camcorder before you start?

You do have to initialize the DVD-R before recording into it and you have to finalize it when it is full (or whenever you wish to) in order to view it on DVD players.

Thanks for using Fixya!

Can you initialize a DVD-RW after you have recorded on it?

hi its geoff
yes you can. i dose say that no more recording can be done after the disc is finalized (thats true, you first have to unfinalize the cd to write more files on it.but you can initialize the disk at any time but you lose the recorded content(it frormats the disk) then you can use the disk over and over again. remember finalizing and unfinalizing requires you to plug the mains charger into the camcorder it assumes theres not enough power in the battery to do the job and will need the mains every time.but initializing only requires sufficient battery power .

How to record at the start and how to finalise and view in the computer

You need to Finalize the Recording in the Camcorder so that the DVD can be run in any other device like Computer or DVD Player.

Check this Link to download the Operating Instruction Guide.

In the Operating Instruction guide refer page # 44 fro the instruction to finalize the disk.

Refer the Instruction Manual to use the Camcorder.

I want the pictures and video off my DVD-RW on to my computer

Yes, you must finalize to view the dvd in a stand-alone dvd player.

No, battery doesn't have to be charged but the camera does have to be plugged in to do finalizing.

After, finalizing the disk, and you are in fact using DVD-RW (re-writable) disks, yes you can un-finalize them within the Canon camera to record more video.

I have used the same 3 rewritable disks on my Canon over and over again to record many hours of footage.

Canon DC220 DVD Finalization problem

You have to plug the camera into the wall charger in order to finalize. I was having the same problem. Once finalized, I transferred the disk to the PC. You need DVD decrypter software in order to view the videos on the disk. Canon does not supply this. Canon recommended that I use one of several free downloads. They said download "DVD Decrypter" which I downloaded. Type DVD Decrypter into Google search and you will find it. It will rip it and download it to your computer. I then viewed the video with Windows Media. It works fine.
