HCL652W I have a samsung HCL652W 42 in tv that began having convergence problems (i.e. red and green in 3D mode or something similar) tried to manually fix it - while doing so - started to smell melting/burning electrical type odor and unplugged tv) My question is - would you repair or replace? I'm thinking the diagnostic test if 100.00 - but should i just go ahead and replace it as usually when repairing tvs - you don't usually get good results without dropping a load of money? Help Lynn

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Sounds like you need a convergence board. Problem is there might be some transistors that you need as well. I've had a similar issue. Most places will cost $300+ to replace what might be a $15 part. Also there are 2 transistors in there that need to be replaced at the same time (once one goes the other is likely to as well). I would suggest calling Sears to fix it. They charge much less for the visit ($99 min charge) and will replace both parts at the same time.
Sorry I know that's not a true answer on how to replace the convergence board or other parts but mucking around in a rear project tv is a good way to get shocked. Those TV's hold a lot of charge even after unplugging.

This tv have a problems call convergence,it dead.The tv convergence board the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors are dead.These parts must be replaced to solved convergence problems.The shop will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
