Gba sp powers up fine and works well except you can only see half the screen due to damage. It needs new screen. Where to get new screen and how to replace it?
Your best bet is to just buy a refurbished unit from Nintendo or on ebay for less than $50. Replacing the screen can be involved and you still have to find the lcd. If you have one of the newer brighter versions of the SP finding a LCD can be impossible.

How comfortable are you with opening you GBA? This website below is a site that I found to purchase a new screen. All you need to do now is to figure out how to open and remove the old screen. The rest should be a snap. http://store.videogamecentral.com/gbareplscreen.html
The SP has a small circular button near the display when the clamshell is opened. That controls the power to the backlight. Have you tried pressing that?
Did you clean the contacts on the game as well as the system? You may also try setting the GBA back to it's factory settings by turning it on and holding down L,R,A,B and Start
