Mysterious fluctuation in quality of copies.

fuser drum is bad. photocopier use electricity to transfer the toner to the paper, then it is heat fused to paper. it appears that the problem is occurring around the time that the toner is attracted to the paper.

Produces Light Copies

Have you considered changing or checking the toner cartridge?
Does it display a low toner light?

I had a similar problem with a copy machine, where ALL the settings were correct and the toner was light.

The problem was the toner cartridge, the toner was caking because of the temperature. All it took was a good shake at the toner cartridge and it worked.

Also, check to see if the scan bed is messy, a good cleaning the the scanner bed should work as well.

Hope That helps!

Duplicate print below each line on copies/printing/fax, changed fuser unit and drum unit and had cleaned. Seems to happen after toner changes, can the toner cartridge holder be defective and cause this...

Try to stop the copier (by jamming a sensor or opening a cover) mid-way through the printing cycle. Remove the 1/2 copied document out from the drum area. Look to see if you have the double printing. This will eliminate the fuser as the problem. If you don't have the double printing then the fuser's cleaning roller may be shot causing repeat image. If it is in the drum area it will be hard to determine since you already replaced the drum(?). But there is a "cleaning" lamp or charge wire on the drum to check.

Added toner/copies still too light

adding toner to Canon copiers will not fix copy Quality problems. Do the copies look better if you manually adjust your exposure setting? If so you can clean the optics, which are the mirrors under the glass. Be very careful there are alot of sharp metal edges, that can cut you very easily.
You can use windex.

White line and very, very dirty copies

the nealy black copies sounds like the drum is going, try adjusting the exposure to light, if it comes out with the whole page the same way but just lighter than change drum. White line sounds like there is something on the coronas.

Light copies

If you have changed all you mentioned with the correct parts, I can only advice you to change the control board.

Try to warm your papers
The same power you are using now, is it the same you have been using before facing this light copy problem?

Hello Bob,
Where are you located? You should be able to find the toner for this machine. Have you tried www.precisionroller.com ?
I am almost positive that they carry the toner and also consumable part as well as replacement parts.
One of the reasons the copies might be dirty, is that the optics, charge wires, cleaning blade, drum, and or fuser unit might need some parts replaced. Without seeing a copy of what the machine is actually doing, or looking at the machine, it's hard to pin point exactly what is going on.
If you have any questions with the machine, feel free to post any questions and I will be glad to help you.
Good luck.
Hope this helps.

Dark Copies

Jim, A couple of things: 1. OEM (Canon original) toner cartridge or remanufactured/compatible? The first place to start is always with the toner cartridge when image problems occur. Pull the cartridge out and draw back the drum cover. Check to see if the drum is a nice "clean" blue color or if the lines and spots are on it like you described. (These two areas should be handled by someone with experience in copy service) 2. The next thing would involved cleaning under the copy glass. Build up from dust, etc causes a "fogginess" that makes the machine try to adjust the intensity of the exposure lamp to conpensate for this. 3. Also could be a bad upper fuser roller if you started having any paper jams when to paper exits.
